First Baptist Church (Dupont Circle) - recent experiences?

Our new daycare is leaps and bounds run better and our DC is much happier and we pay ALOT less.

How much? Where?

My son is currently at FBC-CDC in the 1 year old Duckling Room. He will soon be transitioning to the 2 year old room - either the Elephants (Ms. Robin) or the Tigers (Ms. Teresa). I'd appreciate any feedback about either room/teacher. Thanks!

I have two kids at First Baptist CDC and cannot stress enough what a wonderful and loving place it is. We have had one child at the JCC, which was also great, but it was too expensive for us, so we switched back to First Baptist. My older child will be there for Pre-K 4 next year -- although we live in DC, we have only one car and like the convenience of one drop-off and year-round school. I hope there are other parents out there who will consider Pre-K at First Baptist for their children. The class will be small (given the competition from free Pre-K in the city), but the teacher Ms. Carolyn, is wonderful. She is a veteran teacher and an always happy, engaged and energetic person. Your kids will love her.

This is too late to help, but in case anyone else is curious, both Ms. Robin (Elephants) and Ms. Theresa (Tigers) are great. Both have been there for years, and I think do a good balance of some learning, but alot of play and socializing (learning to be a good friend). We had Ms. Theresa, and she is loving, warm and energetic, and just a kind soul who loves kids. (How do they do it all day?!) We were very pleased!

I agree with previous poster re: Ms. Carolyn too. If you are looking for good ratios for 3s & 4s FBC has great teachers for both and they get a TON of personal attention (just a handful of kids in each class).

Anyone currently have an infant (under 12 months) in FB CDC Dupont? I am on the waitlist to start this August, and I am going in to tour next week. I've heard good things about it but then read a lot of negative posts on this forum. It seems like most of the worst problems were occurring in 2011 and 2012. I know they have a new director so am wondering if things are better now, particularly for the infants. I toured Bright Horizons Georgetown recently and while its a wonderful center, the cost is just too prohibitive for me.

My son is 2. 5 yrs old and has been at FBC-CDC since he was 4.5 months old. We love it there. You would be lucky to get in. The construction site in front of the center is annoying, but the teachers and the director (Ms. Carolyn) are wonderful. It always surprises me when I see negative posts on DC Urban Moms about the center. The posts that i see on the Dupont Parents list-server for example are much better. I highly recommend it.

11:13, the "realigned" the teacher teams in the infant rooms about 9 months ago, and whileI didn't have experience before, my now one year old had a great experience in the Panda Room. Any current parent will testify to the enthusiasm Ms. Halcia and Ms. Helen bring to their jobs based solely on their performances in the kid's holiday show. The parents do a good job of getting to know each other, and it has made a difference to us. My kid is not only safe, but happy, I'm happy. That's good enough for me!

I also have an infant there -- in the Teddy Bear Room -- and I have nothing but good things to say. We've been at FBC for several years because we have an older child who went through the center and they are fabulous. The teachers are loving and my kids have learned much more than I would have imagined they even could at their young ages. I know a lot of parents were upset with the center several years ago but I believe it has improved since the director left. The overall feeling is very positive.

It's a great place from infant all the way through--not perfect (no center is), but the staff there is fantastic. It has more of a family feel, and Ms. Carolyn is great. If you get a spot, I'd take it!

Another FBC parent here. We've been super happy with the Turtles room with Marcia and Ariel. We just got notified of moving up to the Elephants room, so I'm glad to see the positive comments about Ms. Robin.

However, I'm not happy about the notice we got about "Movie Day"--have they always done these?? We definitely plan to opt out. Here's the info we got (edited for typos):

Movie Day

Thursdays are the Elephants movie days. We watch movies twice a month and every child gets their own day. All movies must be rated "G". Also on movie day the children have either Chinese food or pizza.

If it is your child's movie day you need to bring in one or two movies and $25.00 to buy lunch for the class.

Attached is a menu from the Chinese place that we order from.

Thank you in advance for your cooperation and participation.

The Tigers do pizza and movie day and it is once a month. I'm fine with my kid watching an hour of a G movie.

Resurrecting this old post to ask for current feedback. Anyone know anything about the rooms for 1- and 2-year-olds? Seriously considering this center but I don't know anyone whose kids have gone there, so detailed info would be much appreciated.

Thanks!

That movie day plus buying lunch for everyone sounds off. What kids want to order from a Chinese restaurant? Sounds like something for the teachers-- which is fine, they deserve it, but let's call it what it is.
