They did. That just goes to show you the soccer IQ of some of the parents who will be sitting in the stands with you at your DC’s high school games. Prepare yourself for helpful advice being yelled at your team, like “Boot it! With your toe next time!”

Haha btw my DC top local travel team hasn’t been able to get any important championship due to the lack of fitness of the key players. The coach waste same 3-4 players and they can’t make to finals because of fitness.

You're talking about a different topic.

I guarantee neither Messi nor Ronaldo come anywhere close to the best 2-mile timed run on their own team. We all know Maradona was a marathoner.

Why not do a sprint and cut the slowest kids who can't run an 11 second 100m? Both metrics are physically unattainable for a certain population of kids, and both are a poor measure of how the athlete will perform on the field.

My kid is at a private HS and the players all play on top teams in the DMV, many of the boys are on ECNL/MLSnext teams, etc. The parents have been around soccer for many years, if they also didn’t play themselves.

When my kid was at public MS they had a crossing guard as coach that knew zero about soccer and selected kids that had never played in a pool of kids that were on top area teams. Granted- they lost every single game. It wasn’t much different at the public HS level with my nephews’ schools. One went to college on a full ride and didn’t make his HS team .

A few HS have Club coaches that tend to just select the kids in their system, but that’s not as common.

No one is saying that just because the coach wants fit players that he doesn’t want the best soccer players. He wants both. Tell you what, name a list of current professional European, top 5 league players that aren’t fit. Show me the fatties please. And no, drugged out Maradona and Renaldo (the Brazilian one) post retirement don’t count.

Many college coaches do this.

I would be surprised if Lukaku can run a 5:30 mile even though he is quite fit and one of the best strikers in the world. I'll admit that players in the top leagues nowadays are faster than they were 20 years ago, but you can find many examples of great players from the last 20 years that lacked pace. Some examples that come to mind: Riquelme, Valderrama, Zidane, Pique, Xavi. Who cares if these players could or could not run a 5:30 mile. They could make the right play for 90 minutes.

Lol. That's why I love this forum. Would you care to elaborate? Do you think Lukaku - 6'3'' 205 lbs can run a 5:30 mile? do you think anybody cares? I doubt he ever even tries to run a mile at that pace because it is not useful for his game. Like people have mentioned before, for many players, short high intensity efforts followed by some recovery time over 90 minutes are what's needed.

You’re an idiot.

This is silly, just make your kid work hard and run over the summer. Most 15 year old boys who are athletic and train in the summer should be able to push and make this cut off. This is a way for coaches to weed out based on effort and dedication.

Fwiw with the goalIes and any other exceptional athlete, a good coach will make an exception. My son is a goalie and he can make these targets but I bet they would keep him even if not. Usually athletes get that goalies have different rules. But it’s also much easier to weed out bad goalies than to take a field roster from 125 to 15.

This seems insane to me and a lot like lazy coaching.
