Timed mile for high school soccer tryouts?

You can tell the difference easily between the girl who can run a 5 minute mile and the one who can barely do it in 8 minutes. On the field- the first never wears out and the other needs to rest after three sprints.

I went through this with all three of my kids. My youngest is dealing with it today. She has to run 2 miles in under 16 minutes. This is a girl who plays holding mid for an ECNL team and rarely if ever comes out of a game. She is a high endurance kid. The two mile run put unnecessary mental and physical stress on a young athlete and should not be allowed. This isn’t track it’s soccer.soccer is a sprint recovery game, not a distance runner game. I know some people will say you run 3-5 miles a game, but not all at once.

Gamers can run a 5:30 mile.

what about goalie

Most are also good field players (assuming you aren’t referring to the fat kid who gets stuck there around U10

Bumping a 3 year old thread to push an agenda is a choice. My 10 year old ran 8:15/mile pace for her Girls on the run 5k (3.1 miles) off only soccer training so it's not some huge ask. Not sure why 2 miles in 16 mins is unnecessary physical/mental stress for an ECNL player.

Look at how fast and far Messi runs to win a game

Unfortunately, neither your kid nor mine has radar vision, the grace of a ballerina, magician-like touch on a ball, or instinct built over 20 years of playing at the highest levels in the world. Considering, might want to learn how to run to cover a 100 yard pitch. Also, believe it or not, even Messi has areas that can be improved. His own coaches have criticized him for "going for a walk" sometimes. The game requires fitness. That's the main point here. Any teenager who can't run 8 minute miles has a very short career until that changes. Full stop.

Game requires soccer fitness
Not cross-country fitness

My coach told me that the real reason he did this was to see who was training over the summer. It had nothing to do with cutting kids but rather it was just made obvious who was and wasn't training during the off months. He would also tell all the kids including the incoming freshamn about this in the spring so you about 6 months to prepare even for freshman.

This is old, but 5 min mile vs 8 min mile is such a ridiculous comparison. Also the difference from 5:01 to 5:59 is far bigger than the difference from "6" to "8"

That's the exact reasoning for every HS coach

By HS, a player can ball or they can't. I've never seen an ENCL player or other high level player cut from a roster unless the coach doesn't know what they are doing. Now there are lots of bad HS soccer coaches, who are just clocking checks, but there are also lots of good ones too.

If your kid can ball, a good coach won't care about their mile time. But if your player isn't as skilled or technical with the ball, a coach might use the players time in the mile as the deciding factor for the last few players to select for a roster spot.

It's a stupid metric for a soccer player, but it's still used.

The girl running a 5 minute mile is on the track team, not playing soccer.

At our HS, it's not about the top 75 kids that actually have a shot at making one of the 2 25 kid rosters. It's to self cut a portion of the other 50 kids that just show up because they have played soccer at some point in their life and decided to tryout with their friends. After the 1st day many don't return after that test and the coaches can start looking at the kids that actually might make JV or varsity That about to the most it's used for based on what my kid says

What is the running requirement for HS girls?
