Other recommendations for a kid who really likes JMU?

I grew up in VA, so have a decent sense of the vibe for in-state schools. I think the closest thing to JMU is non-engineering VT, so I would apply even if it is a reach. GMU, though probably the most statistically similar, has a completely different feel.

App State seems like a good suggestion as does Delaware. I wonder if there are any other UNC branch campuses that also fit the bill — I am not too familiar, but maybe others are. Maybe Wilmington if the mountains aspect isn’t part of the appeal.

To be clear, when I talk about JMU’s vibe, what I mean is: a relaxed and social place with happy people, rural/college town/big campus, generally conformist in appearance yet not completely consumed by Greek Life.

UNC Charlotte is very similar. We just visited a couple weeks ago. UNC Wilmington’s campus has more of a community college feel.

I agree, but VCU has a VERY different vibe. It's an urban campus. Some kids love that, others do not. It's wise to visit campus before applying.
