This.

+1 they could pay me and I still wouldn’t send my child there.

Why?

She’s afraid her snowflake will become a Republican because she did not teach them to think independently.

Thought so.

Always amuses my that the ones that purport to be to most progressive and tolerant are actually the most regressive and intolerant.

So a bunch of a-holes gang up on someone who wouldn’t send their kid to Alabama and somehow they are intolerant? Perhaps they just do not think it’s a good school? Perhaps they are not all about football and flouting COVID rules. Does not make them intolerant just means that’s not the right fit for them.

Hit a nerve? I’m sure “You couldn’t pay me to send my child there” was meant in only the nicest “just not a good fit” kinda way. And I’m sure those describing it as a “mediocre” education have done extensive research into the depth and quality of the programs offered by the university.

Talk about people who can dish it out, but not take it.

+1 the hypocrisy is revolting. I grew up in Silver Spring but travel to Alabama for work quite a bit. I find people there quite open minded (mainly Montgomery and Birmingham) compared to the ridiculous toxicity here, especially the parents not allowing their high school age kids think for themselves. My older are already in college and youngest is not into sports so Alabama is not his thing. But for those that are it us a fine inexpensive choice.

Same here...and mine could've gotten the full ride + stipend. Let's just say sports and greek life aren't at the top of his list.

Maybe he’ll grow up.

I can't count the number of A flags and license plate holders I've seen around DC. Graduating college with no debt and the ability to move anywhere and meet someone who will understand ROLL TIDE...priceless. Way more bang for the buck than some tiny liberal arts college no one but the most elitist has ever heard of. This is a smart move. Congratulations!

this is the best response thus far.

I'm glad s/he are excited for their kid, but I don't see people who wouldn't choose it, myself included, as being thin skinned. I'm from the south so I know most people are friendly and I always appreciate southern hospitality. So while southern charm, athletics, weather and the alumni network are certainly factors in school selection, they're just not at the top of my DD's list. But, I'm happy for your kid.

It isn't because you/your child wouldn't choose it that bothers people. It's the anger, judgment, and assumption that everyone who attends Alabama (or any other southern school for that matter) is racist and ignorant that bothers some readers on this site.

Bama might be a perfectly fine school, but I can’t get past the fact that my crappy ex and the woman he cheated on me with both teach there.

Which college(s) did they attend that produced such fine upstanding human beings? Not Alabama, I’m guessing.

OP, I am curious if you are getting more merit money or financial aid than the $28,000, which looks like it covers most of the OOS tuition, but not room and board. Is your child getting an additional scholarship that covers room and board? Where does the rest of the "nearly full ride" come from? My HS junior may be interested in 'Bama, as he loves sports, Big State U's, and warm weather.
