DD on her screens all the time now - should I let it go?

We have cracked down, primarily because her eyesight has become fuzzy in the last few weeks and even before going to the ophthalmologist, we know she needs new glasses.

Currently she's not allowed to use screens at all until school starts at 9am - previously she used to watch videos and chat with friends from 6 am to 9am. Then after school, I require her to do something not screen related for a portion of the afternoon, and there are no screens after dinner.

I think I need to restrict her even more, but I will need to bribe her.

Suggestions for bribes welcome!

Why would you take away her only/main source of socialization?

OP here. When DD was 11 she only got 30mins a day and she didn’t even use it always, hence my dismay at how things have deteriorated.

These devices are highly addicting and letting your child use one for hours every day us reinforcing addictive behavior that will easily translate to substances and other behaviors later in life.

Furthermore, beyond the very real danger of deteriorating mental health linked to heavy device use, there is also very real danger young kids will develop kyphosis from the posture most of them use while looking at handheld screens.

More than 2 hours a day is negligent parenting.

More than two hours a day? My teens go to school online for 6 hours per day. Plus homework, then watch a few shows. This is the teen forum.

Are they doing all of those things on their phones? Probably not, right?

I feel you, OP. Completely. I caved on TikTok a few months into the pandemic when my DD turned 12 because she said all her friends were on it and she was feeling left out (and they were sending her videos to watch via text anyway). She has an hour limit on TikTok a day, which is still a lot, but it seems like her friends are on it all day long, and texting until 1 or 2 in the morning. (My DD’s device shuts off at 8pm.) It just feel kind of ridiculous that I’m the “strict” parent among her friends considering how many hours she still manages to spend on her device.
