OP, rather than doing something like this which is risky and shady, if you have a teaching credential, why not do something like VIP Kid in the early morning or late nights while your kids are sleeping? |
Yellow flags? Have you ever toured any in-home daycares?! Many of the places I saw had a mega tvs in the playroom and practically zero toys. Another place had a security camera so caregiver could see parents walking up for pickup ( and I’m assuming quickly turn of the tv). Some of the in-homes I saw were pretty dirty, which made me lose all faith in county “licensing” |
Op here- specifically stated I didn’t want to do anything risky or shady!would only do this is legal and able to get a license through the county. I know many in-homes are run out of rental apartments so wasn’t sure if it would make a difference being my second home. |
It is a huge yellow flag that you are a nursing mom with a kindergartener who has no professional experience caring for young children. I think you'll be in over your head and the people who will suffer for it are the poor kids whose parents are paying for your "in home." |
NP. I don’t doubt that there are shady set-ups, but exterior security cameras are pretty common in homes, period, so your assumption is a bit of a stretch. |
And once I heard about this in-home daycare that wasn’t in a home at all, it was in an unfurnished abandoned condo with a mom who spent all day engaging with her very young baby and dragged the whole lot out once a day for kindergarten pickup. |
If what you're looking for is a few hundred extra each week, I still don't see why you can't teach English online or something while your kids are sleeping or while your DH is watching them at night. It would be easier and give you the flexibility you crave if you really want to be home with your baby. |
My husband does drop off and my kindergartener is in private that has aftercare. I would just go to “work” doing this instead of my regular job. |
Yeah, almost everyone I know around here has a Ring or similar. |
You think those security cameras are so they can turn off the television? They’re so that the care provider can see who’s at the door before flinging it open to any rando who rings the bell while she has other peoples’ children in her care. It’s a safety measure. Legality of this second home set-up aside, you have a lot to learn about running a home daycare. |
If you want to make some extra cash while being with your baby, a much easier path to the amount of money you are talking about would be:
1. Cut expenses by taking K out of private school. You are in Arlington, my guess is public K will be fine. 2. Use your teaching license to get a job with one of the online English teaching companies as mentioned here. You have to be able to do this without distractions and with your webcam on but you can make 14-26/hour. Take the early morning and some night shifts while your DH is home and the kids are sleeping. |
It would definitely be furnished, just wouldn’t have the extra furniture like adult beds so more room for play space and toys. Kitchen and fridge would only be used for daycare food. Have a license to teach K.
Again, I’m not worried about drumming up business on this board— already have people who know me well and whose schedules would work for this too.. Was more just asking if it was do-able licensing-wise. Didn’t think about HOA restrictions so that was useful to hear on here. Thanks all! |
Op here. Thanks for these suggestions. I am more looking at it from standpoint of want quality care next year during uncertain times— and knowing I have friends who are also worried about the same. Also have no idea what the schools will be like next year. I stayed home with my last one and found part time employment no problem, it just seemed that it wasn’t worth it as I was paying full price but only needed part time care. I wouldn’t want to work something during odd hours because I would want that time for my K and DH. |
In Arlington an in-home daycare/family day home needs to be in an actual residence, defined as:
“Residence” means principal legal dwelling or abode that is occupied for living purposes by the provider and contains the facilities necessary for sleeping, eating, cooking, and family living. Otherwise you're operating a daycare center which has a lot more restrictions. |
