How many gifts do most kids get for Christmas?

My budget is the same for both kids, but DD (14) is getting 3 gifts while DS (16) is getting 5. Then they’ll get a bunch of sweet treats with some socks and lip balms in their stockings.

Just to add - they get one expensive item each, and the rest are smaller gifts.

I think mine ended up with around 15 each this year but no one wanted anything big so we spent the same as last year with twice as many things to wrap. Lots of clothes, books, crafty things, PJs, some legos etc.

Probably about ten each, including relatives' gifts.

We try to steer the sibling to get something from the "something you want, need, wear and read" concept but so far they don't want to, and we don't think this is the hill to die on, especially since we got the grandparents on board with it.

You sound like a good mom.

This year we will give them 3 family gifts, and 3 individual gifts, plus stockings.

This year probably about 20 or so things to open. A mix of books, toys, gadgets. Nothing expensive. That's just from us/santa. Probably 10 or so other gifts from family too. It's slightly more than most years, but I like have lots of things to wrap and open. I never spend that much money, although I'm sure that will change as kids get older.

They're getting maybe a dozen each this year (more than usual), but a lot of that is clothes and books.

My husband and I each spend $50 on her, so that ends up being 2-5 gifts. Then my parents buy her 5-6, then she gets at least one each from our siblings (4 more) and a couple of other random ones.

One “major” gift each then a bunch of tschotsckes

I don't mean to be snarky, but I'm curious

When people say they do want, need, wear, read and then some things that don't fit, what would you get a child that doesn't fit into those 4 categories?

I mean, I know lots of people whose IL's get them presents they neither want nor need, but as a parent, I try to avoid that. If my kids don't want it, or need it, why would I buy it?

This is what I WANT to do.
