What’s your budget? I love Montclair, Madison and Chatham in Jersey.

+ 1 to Madison

Your husband sounds really selfish

Uprooting kids in high school but won’t commute from suburbs!

I grew up in CT / Manhattan. You do not want to live in Jersey. Ever.

Agree. Sounds mean but there is nothing inspiring about even the absolute nicest parts of nj

We have abandoned the idea of NYC private schools, and so now we will have a few months to try to figure out the public school system as it does not seem straightforward.

Seriously, you do not want to do this. Please read this: https://www.schools.nyc.gov/enrollment/enroll-grade-by-grade/high-school/waitlists

A waitlist is the BEST you are going to do right now. AND those CLOSE in mid-August.

If you are foolish enough to insist on doing this, get yourself on waitlists NOW.

Please note though that the "specialized" public high schools do NOT have waiting lists.

Doesn’t sound mean. Just stupid.

Also let's discuss how awesome the food is in Jersey and how I am so sad I can't eat at a restaurant and BYOB like I do back home. I am jealous OP. Have a bagel and go down the shore for me.

Yep. It's really one of my favorite places I've ever lived.

This is not a good commute. I don't know where Westfield is, but I've commuted to Newark on NJ transit and the Path from Manhattan and it's a nightmare. NJ transit is beyond horrible. You will literally get stuck for 30 minutes without any notification about what's going on. Delays are common. Trains are cancelled at the last minute and without warning. The PATH train is crowded, there are many delays, and notifications are sparse. They are always doing repairs, which of course delays everything. Also, people are incredibly rude. I once had someone try to punch me in the stomach when I was visibly pregnant, because I asked them to stop blocking the door when I was trying to get off the train. He will be stressed out by the time he gets to the office.

How much money will he be making?

Rye and Westchester are where many go if they don't want to go out to Greenwich or Stamford, CT.

Greenwich is just as close as some Westchester towns. And it has the express train.

It is stupid. I’m from NJ and just like any other place, NJ has its good and bad parts.

Original Poster here, I came on this board for something else and was surprised to see this post had survived. Thought I would update for the fun of it - yes you were all right, we decided to stay put in DC and DH goes up and down and does not need to go all the time. For what it's worth, he is not mean, or stupid as some suggested, we just had to work through the process as originally thought it would be better to all be together. That does not make a mean or selfish husband.
However, thanks for all the comments. It all worked out and it just goes to show that sometimes there is actual wisdom on this board.
For anyone else who finds themselves in this position, the commute is actually pretty easy and from my perspective sometimes its nice to have a little more me time, so a win-win.

10 years ago, been a while, but it reminded me of downtown Silver Spring years ago when it was more depressing.
