We had hot cocoa this weekend after decorating our tree. We started with popcorn, then moved to the cocoa. I love that combo of salty and then something sweet. I want to buy some proper drinking chocolate for my DD’s stocking this year!

Because she specified Williams Sonoma and shortened it to WS instead of just posting "When/how are your drinking hot chocolate?". It's striking a lot of readers as tacky for one reason or another.

Drinking chocolate is much less common (and far more decadent) than hot cocoa. There's only a handful of places to get it , including WS. There was nothing tacky about OPs post.

OK, PP, with your pronouncement, it is decided. There was nothing tacky about OP's post. Thanks for letting us know.

It reads like a marketing tweet.

Little bit, yup.

Because a marketer would only use the initials?

She didn't say "drinking chocolate", though. She said "hot chocolate", which to me is synonymous with hot cocoa. Big whoop, you bought branded hot chocolate from a mall store.

Hot chocolate and hot cocoa are two different things, each exactly what they sound like. Where is the confusion?

For many people, they are interchangeable. I also don't say "hot cocoa", I just say "cocoa". I assume that if someone offers me cocoa, it's not going to be a mug of powder.

How has no one referenced Drew Magary's Haters Guide to the Williams Sonoma catalog yet?!

https://www.vice.com/en/article/qjd4k3/the-2019-haters-guide-to-the-williams-sonoma-catalog

I have high hopes for the 2020 version.

And because it would be coming from a clearly labelled social media account, it would be clear what the initials stood for.

I hope OP has another career.

So would the original post still be problematic if you replaced “WS” with “TJ’s”? Is it the familiarity/insiderness or the brand itself or the “celebrate the moments of your life”TM* aspect of the first post that people found so offensive?

If the OP had left out the brand and then said in her message something along the lines of, "Our favorite hot chocolate is from Williams Sonoma- share your favorites!", this post would be overwhelmingly positive.

Every grocery store with an international foods section has it, at least where I live.

You're welcome! It's one of the few pieces of writing that literally makes me cry laughing every single time. I'm so grateful it exists.

I think it's both. I wish OP would come back and explain what was going through their mind.

Thanks for reminding me of Parker Posey. Got a good laugh from your post.
