On the list of things to get offended by, this is one of the dumbest. I proudly support the BLM movement and the national conversation we are having on race relations but renaming the "master bedroom" has got to be one of the most inconsequential, silliest suggestions I've heard in a long time. The master bedroom has NOTHING to do with slavery. Vague, nebulous correlation does not equal causation.
Since enslaved people often were forced to picked cotton, is cotton going to become a "racist fabric" because of its historical connection with the southern pre-war agrarian economy? Give me a break. |
I’m an agent and have used “owner’s suite” for years - not because of a slavery connotation, but because it’s sexist. It feels stupid to show a house to a single woman or a female couple and talk about the master bedroom. |
NP. Thanks to the Realtor for chiming in. I have also noticed “his” and “hers” closets are now just “walk in closet”. |
| I really thought this was a parody but based on some of the replies it seems to be real. Please know that when you focus on things like this, it can actually be counterproductive and make you seem unserious. If you feel offended when you hear the term "master bedroom," how about channeling that energy toward discussions of substantive policy change like abolishing qualified immunity for police officers? |
+1000000 |
I’m an agent who commented earlier, and I actually donated money to help elect the current Governor of Colorado who just signed a bill abolishing qualified immunity for police officers. But I’m probably not going to bring that up to my clients. Instead I will just keep on not using an antiquated, sexist term. Thanks for the advice, though. |

OP is clearly white. I’m black and let me tell you what we really need:
-criminal justice reform - end of the school to prison pipeline - affordable and equitable healthcare - quality schools These are the things you should care about OP, not changing what we call master bedroom |
Your history is way off. The civil war ended in 1864. The first minimum wage law was passed in 1912 in Massachusetts. The first federal minimum wage law that was passed in 1933 was struck down by the Supreme Court. In 1938, a federal minimum wage was re-established at 25 cents an hour via the Fair Labor Standards Act. |

Master Bedroom has ZERO to do with slavery.
In the 1920s Sears sold a large house model intended for families with many kids. The made the Master bedroom larger as it was a place the home owners could get away from their kids. The concept was you were the masters of your family (husband and wife) and deserved a larger room. |
Give us a f**ing break, OP and stop this madness. As others said, Master Bedroom has nothing to do with slavery and racism. More than one black PPs chimed in that they don't care a bit about it. This is not what will make things ok. |
Walk in closets are also a ADA issue. Folks in wheelchairs etc will be upset |

I noticed this change when I logged into the MLS today. As of September 1
The following items were released September 1: “Master Bedroom/Bathroom” is now “Primary Bedroom/Bathroom” in Search and Listing Management. In order to align with the Real Estate Standards Organization’s (RESO) new industry standard, we updated our terminology from “Master Bedroom/Bathroom” to reflect “Primary Bedroom/Bathroom” in both Search and Listing Management. Learn more about this change here. |
Hysterical since there are still many street names with the word “plantation” in them in Houston/Sugarland |
This change from master bedroom and master bathroom to primary bedroom and bathroom coincided with the end of racism in the United States. You are a hero OP for making that simple request. |
