Applying for need based aid when you are ‘right on the edge’

Anonymous
Prof here with some knowledge of my institution’s financial situation. The crisis facing higher ed right now is massive and dire. Even the wealthiest institutions are struggling to reduce their operating costs in light of steep anticipated revenue declines. Financial aid, like everything else, is going to be on the chopping block. It would not be wise to assume that universities will continue with need-blind admissions, even if that has been their policy in the past. Many will not be able to afford it.

Is your university currently need-blind?

If they change that policy will they not tell applicants about that change?

Yes, my institution is need-blind. I don’t know whether that will change. If it does, I certainly hope admissions will be transparent about it. My point was mostly that the current situation in higher ed is so dire and so different from the past that it’s not really possible to make solid predictions about what will happen next year.
