I didn't know that people's ability to talk with a mask on was dependent on societal and cultural factors. |
-People who have never worn a mask all day long: I can't wear a mask all day long! -People who have worn a mask all day long: Actually, you can. -You: So obnoxious! What do those people know about it? |
Do you literally talk all day at your job while wearing a mask? |
Do teachers literally talk all day, now? They didn't when I was a student, and they didn't when I was a student teacher. Also, what is happening in other countries where teachers are wearing masks? |
I do talk a lot and it's not like I lecture for entire class period. But schools are old, hot and you've got to drink water. I'll tell you all what's going to happen. They'll order the masks. Within a week, kids will be constantly pulling them down, getting passes from the nurse because of their medical conditions etc. Everyone will slack off as to compliance. The masks will not prevent an outbreak and we'll be back to all virtual learning. Social distancing is the only possibly solution and hybrid education. This is going to impact parents in the workplace immensely and for that, I am sorry. We need a better way in our country. But just because you saw a picture of little elementary schoolers in China wearing masks, that doesn't mean that they wear them all day perfectly. And kids in Europe aren't wearing them. They are socially distancing. And now I'm done getting sucked into this rabbit hole. I've actually got quite a bit of grading to do today. |

I did a video conference last week in a mask. There were 4 other locations, all with masked people. Everyone heard one another with no problems.
Teachers need to buck up and stop complaining about masks. |
Yeah, MCPS students aren’t taking MARC to school. Few are taking Metrobus or Metro trains. There’s a sizable number of low income kids who take Ride On, but most kids who don’t walk, bike, or carpool are on MCPS’ fleet of cheese buses. Dirty in regular times, they will be teeming with coronavirus in October if we do a full reopen. |
Adults are better at listening than kids. |

So what the the answer?
Other countries across the WORLD are able to function with teachers and students in masks. Entire hospital staffs in the US from doctors to custodians are able to function with masks. US teachers CANNOT, WILL NOT teach in masks. = All US schools will be virtual until there is a vaccine. |
I guess you didn’t read the report or listen to the press conference. |

+1. As a private tutor I see the downstream impact of this - kids who aren’t taught effectively end up not understanding the material. Since math builds on prior concepts these kids end up thinking they are dumb at math or, worse, dumb overall. Teachers reinforce that these kids are stupid, because the alternative is that they are capable student taught poorly reflects badly on the teacher. |

I commend them for being thoughtful and exploring many possibilities. What about really want is a 100% distance learning option for those kids with fragile medical situations or who live with such relatives. |
| I don’t think it’s reasonable to expect teachers and kids to wear masks all day. Everyone needs to expect to be back to school in the fall as normal. Extra cleaning and hand sanitizer. |
MCPS parents will take MARC, Metrobus, Metro, and RideOn to work. |
