"Hire a college kid" -- the go to answer for summer

Anonymous
Instead of a college kid, hire an out of work preschool teacher or an elementary school teacher who doesn’t have their own kids. We’re paying ours $20/hr. We will flex our schedules and pay for 6hrs/day - she doesn’t want to work full time.

At $600/wk for 2 kids it is basically what I was paying for camp any way. It’s easier for me to trust a 28yr old who lives with roomates who work from home than a HS or college kid who is out doing who knows what.

I hired college aged summer nannies for many years. Some came to us through word of mouth. Some I hired from care.com. Some I hired from Craigslist. Now my daughter and her friends are old enough to be the college nannies. They are mostly getting jobs through parental networking - parents of younger kids in my office building, at our summer pool, etc. If you are interested in hiring a summer nanny, work your networks.

Camps are $150-200/week per child. Max $400/week. College student will run $600-800/week ($15-20 per hour).

Uh, where is this? Not in the "DC" that is "DCUrbanMom"

Montgomery county camps are this price

Yes, many DMV area camps are in this price range. Maybe the camps in the Potomac, MD area are pricey because they know residents in that area will pay $$$. Or maybe you are paying for higher-end camp experiences.

Including after care? This seems really cheap.

It doesn't see cheap to me. I pay $800 for 2 weeks of sleep away camp and $175-$250 for camp here and the $250 camp is not the norm, maybe 1 special camp.

Maybe your camps are overpriced.

Maybe you live in central Wisconsin? Or at least Assburn / Urbana / Charles County??

Nope moco

I have not seen ANY posts on NextDoor or neighborhood FB groups looking for HS or College kids - but talking to friends and neighbors in passing it turns out everyone I know has help.

I didn’t want to publicly post only to have my head bit off by a bunch of know it alls telling me how to social distance. So I went to my local FB page and NextDoor and searched for “babysitter” and wrote down the names of the people recommended on the most recent posts. Then I called those people. That’s how I found our current babysitter.

Yes, in the actual district. Easy to find if you're looking for it.

This is what we are planning on doing if there are not any camps.

Has anyone else considered the downside to introducing yet more change to their kids right now, as in, getting a new sitter? I guess if you have older kids, or easy going children who have adjusted well to everything going on, it'd be fine. Kids are pretty resilient. I'd rather keep things consistent for them, if at all possible.

This is what we'd like to do, but I don't know where to find someone who meets this description.

When I looked on Nanny.com, it was hard to come by a person with childcare or teaching experience who was accepting only $20/hr. The few who were at that rate had only babysitting experience. Most others were charging at least $25 and some higher (depending if they were offering tutoring too).

Wait, so a lot of your friends and neighbors have help now? That was a clever idea to avoid the drama.

Montgomery, Alabama?

Because the price list on Montgomery county, MD is $295/week--and it's only 9 am-3:30. Extended care (till 5:30) adds an extra $80/week

Same here. Finding them is not hard, if you ask around. Paying them enough might be the bigger issue.
