Jokes on them they'd make like 20 bucks for a 720.

That’s 20 bucks more than they had before.

They’re loaned by student ID and will be billed.

And what do you think will happen when the student’s family can’t afford the bill?

Of course it will be written off. And it probably should be written off, unless you have real proof it was sold or intentionally stolen (which of course you won’t).

But let’s not pretend that billing it to the student ID will make a lick of difference in most instances.

There are plenty. Stop making excuses. How do you not have a laptop as a teacher?

I didn’t get a laptop issued by my district until my 6th year of teaching. And we only got them because of a grant. Some teachers I work with still don’t have one.

You’d be surprised how many people in IT don’t have all the infrastructure at home to everything they do at work. My brother was at the store and the owner of a 40 person IT company was incredulous that he was having to buy WiFi cards for some employees.

Teacher from above. I didn’t have any computer to use my first six years. The computer teacher begged a local university for their hand me downs. Even my mom who knows nothing about technology said “This computer is really old.” Lol. I think I used it in college 15 yrs before.

Most it companies provide a computer. And reimburse for WiFi or cell phone or both if you work at home. If they don’t work at home, why would they have that set up but I think it’s strange not to have a computer or iPad at that level. You don’t buy WiFi cards. He was probably buying a hot spot or modem/ router.

Mcps teachers get them but most of the teachers we have had bring their own because the chrome books are slow new and after a few years really slow. Not sure the love for them.

stop with the shaming. When you do this, you make all of us who need them the “poors”.

It’s not your place to judge or tell other people not to pick one up.

If you are low income, yes you take one. But, if you are living in a $600K+ house and can afford it and choose to spend your money differently, shame on you. I'm so tired of people pretending to be "poor" when they make good income but are house poor based off the choices they may. There are families who really need them and help. If you are one of those, yes, you take it, but you don't take one if you can afford it and choose not to. Many of us had to buy them. We live in a tiny house and had a great laugh at posts commenting about what people do in tiny houses.. that's us but at least we can afford to buy our kids what they need.

Yay, how nice that have so many devices at home. Pat yourself on the back for that. Now go buy books instead of borrowing from the library. There are many kids who wanted the books you borrowed, but yeah you got there first.

Library is closed until April soooo

Yes and now you have whatever you borrowed for 6 weeks or more. The poor child who wanted it that day couldn't get it then because you borrowed it. If you had bought your own damn books, that child could have borrowed the books you took.

See where I am going?

You probably won't since you seem too dense to understand that even rich or UMC parents may not have that many computers at home and would rather borrow from the school and give it back after all this is over. Maybe they just don't want to spend on things they deem unnecessary for their kids after this is over.

If Warren Buffet thought like you, he wouldn't be so rich.

People claiming upper middle here are making $150k to 700k. Your kids need a computer in middle and high school. Why not give them the tools they need. Warden Buffet lives very well and has what he needs.

Then, try helping get them what they need. Help the kids with clothing, food, school supplies, hair care, etc. There are a few schools regularly asking for donations for the kids. Imagine how desperate you have to be to do that.

What more can we ask of teachers?

You give and you give and you never question why.

You have only yourselves to blame for never learning to say no.

Kids having what they need makes teaching easier.

I call troll. They could track the chrome book with the serial number, which I'm sure they're recording alongside the student ID.

Also, who TF on ebay wants a six year old, grimy ass chrome book? Agree with the other PP - do those kids a favor and get yourself another job.

At my school only admins, team leaders, the RTSE, and IEP case managers get a MCPS-issued laptop. Even if you float, you don’t get one. So 85% of the professional staff use a device they personally own or share with another family member. If you have shared with a spouse or a child until now, it probably worked because you didn’t both need to be online at the same time.

Doesn’t matter.

It’s $20 more than they had before. And $20 they can use to purchase something else.

I would call you a troll.

If you actually work in MCPS, you would know that there is a shortage of qualified teachers. You would know that MCPS needs every teacher it can get. You wouldn’t be advocating teachers leave just because you don’t like to hear the truth - that families WILL be taking these Chromebooks and selling them. At least a few of them will.

My kids have that book about Kid Presidents. There is a blurb about how Kennedy used to steal milk bottles off of people’s front porches and then sell them back to make a nickel profit.

Look, kids do sh$t like this. Always have, always will.

Impossible to expect MCPS to enforce that families return Chromebooks.

I would definitely consider these Chromebooks to be ‘gifts’.

We don’t use the library. Nice try. I buy my kids books or ever better, kindle so less paper.

Well, that's silly, PP. Why would you not use the library? Libraries are great.

My HS kid: "They're giving out uniforms during practice tomorrow."

Me (if I were DCUM Parent): "NO! They are LOANING uniforms during practice tomorrow! The uniforms are a LOAN, not a GIFT!"

[My HS kid, internally: "No duh."]
