TJHSST vs Base School for College Admissions

Anonymous
But why do you assume they burn out? My senior daughter has absolutely loved TJ.
Anonymous
Agreed. My DS is a sophomore and hasn’t suffered burnout. Loves it there.

My TJ graduate absolutely loved TJ and totally prepared for top STEM college. TJ isn't perfect, or for everyone, but it's damn good for the right fit kids.

I don’t think the current School Board has any love for TJHSST. They didn’t even bother with a press release this year when the admissions offers came out. You could say that was due to Covid, but they’ve churned out plenty of other news releases over the past month.

Why is a press release necessary???????? Thirsty much?

Current TJ kids are a known quantity to admissions officers, who will have fewer tools to differentiate base school kids (no captains of sports teams now, standardized testing is a mess, etc.). TJ kids may fare even better in future years than they had in the past.

lol yall are ridiculous there are plenty of kids at base schools that are just as good as an average TJ kid. Colleges understand this. There is no bump for TJ and actually a negative unless you are going Engineering/Tech which gasp is the actual purpose of the school.

No. The PP is right because the TJ curriculum is so uniform and all the kids take the same basic classes. So it is known that kids can do high level high stress math, are thoroughly grounded in 4 science disciplines, have strong writing skills, both scientific and in analysis of fiction and non-fiction texts. There is no way to take an “easier math track” until AB bs BC Calc. No way to take an easier science track. No way to get an easier English track at all. And year, after year, after year, kids come out with the same classes. So admin offers know what a B in TJ AP Physics means. And TJ prove themselves over and over once they get on campus. A UVA dean did an analysis and AP said they carried the highest GPAS of any school sending 10 or more kids.

Of course there are kids that can do this well at base schools. But it’s a lot harder to figure out who they are. Vs TJ, where a kid literally cannot graduate without certain important skill sets, certain classes, and proving that they can manage a difficult, intense workload, conduct scientific research, have a deep understanding of math, collaborate in group projects...

If true there is certainly some irony in UVA trying to get more selective with TJ kids. Why reject more of those who do the best? Of course, it also seems TJ kids are rejecting UVA. 81 chose to attend UVA in 2016. In 2019 it was 37.

TJHSST is a selective Governor's School In the past, it was a source of pride for FCPS and each year a press release was issued shortly after offers of admission were extended that indicated the number of applicants, the number of offers, and the demographics of the admitted students.

They delayed in issuing a press release last year and this year they seem to be waiting even longer, even though the challenges associated with COVID-19 haven't kept them from churning out other news releases. I don't think it's "thirsty" to wonder whether this reflects a greater reluctance on the part of FCPS to call attention to TJHSST and/or who is and is not getting admitted.

Or, it could be that FCPS is hot mess right now. Just sayin...

The school system has come to a complete halt because of the Blackboard fiasco and you -- yet you -- wish to whine about a press release to announce the TJ admittances. A personal email or letter to each admittee is not enough. You need the town crier to herald you through the public square. I don't believe for one second that TJ is suffering from lack of publicity (see USNews Best High Schools rankings).

Take a chill pill and relax....but do stay at home and shelter in place.

Press release usually comes out in late April/early May, and this year is VERY different.

And most of the broad generalizations on here are pretty spot on, honestly. There are exceptions, but there will always be in a school of 1800+ kids.

Yes, it isn't just about getting in--it's about being prepared to really thrive in college (both in terms of academics and in terms of being happy) and if you're going to a competitive STEM college, TJ is absolutely amazing preparation.

They have issued dozens of news releases since the shutdown and held electronic meetings to discuss regular business. It's not like the public affairs people who churn out these releases are the ones who are going to solve the IT problems or have that much on their plates.

Had TJ been named the top school in the country (with 7 other schools in the top 10 in the state) a decade ago, FCPS would have put out a press release. But the current crowd is so obsessed with "equity" that it won't congratulate a TJ or Langley because they're worried it might upset someone at Annandale or Lee. Hell, they've even talked about suing Great Schools because they don't like having schools that are only rated a 2 or 3 now. They want TJ to fly as far under the radar as possible.

It was named the top school in the nation more than a decade ago and they did put out multiple press releases. This is common knowledge on both fronts. Drop the agenda and do better.

Over the past 12 months, FCPS has issued 312 press releases. TJHSST is featured or mentioned in 61 of such releases. According to my base- school, non-magnet curriculum, mathematics calculation, that amounts to approximately 20% -- one out of five. Sure, keep pushing your "FCPS is anti-equity, anti-elitist, drum-banging agenda......"

Last year's news items was released on May 31, 2019. Just wait a few more weeks before you mount your high horse and lunge after windmills.
