they are not going to read each of 1000+ applicant's scores/essays/recommendations -- the cogat test acts like a filter to reduce the number of candidates.

You think? So how do you figure they will grade essay on the scale they need to fill?
This is cute. How the Cogat could be the only filter and factor since you can have
tons of students who would score exactly the same in Cogat having the same
amount of questions wrong.
How do you pick who gets in then?
Besides, Cogat is something you can prepare to and score higher if you do, otherwise
the test prep centers would go bankrupt. Test can not and is not the only factor,
essays and recommendations and other achievements do have some weight
don't you think? So suggesting that MCPS will just ignore them is really
offensive to the office.

Do you work for the county? "offensive to the office"? Give me a break.

if so, that means MCPS is so dumb to use CogAT.. no MCPS is not dumb -- you are !

It is so ridiculous to assume CogAT test would produce tons of students with same scores.

Maybe there are 20-30% among the testers who scored high enough to be considered for further review -- then grades, recommendations, awards, map/parcc are also being reviewed.

Also the filter has to be the same, not that I am in favor of CogAT, but it has been chosen to test all applicants with the exact test.

grades/recommendations are certainly more subjective -- they depend heavily on schools/teachers

No not at all. You can score 99% and have very different range of wrong answer in different sections.
Even those who have only one or two wrong in the quantitative will have different amount of "wrongs"
in other sections, yet the end score can be the same because the total of right and wrongs will be equal.

Cogat is just the beginning.. Once you do Cogat, then other things come into play.

That's why you need essay,
teachers recs,
achievements,
past grades,
other tests scores,
current and past enrolments in the higher level classes,
awards..

Am I missing something?

If it would be JUST the Cogat, you would know the results the very next day after the test since
it was computer based. Right?

Teacher recs aren't exactly reliable as a metric.

I agree, and I am a teacher.

Nobody said it was just CogAT. It is how to use filter to select candidates for further review given high participation rate

PP, use your thinking hat!
I did not say ALL students can end up having the same score because they had the same
amount of questions wrong. It is about the top group who still can end up
having the same score WITHIN that TOP group, so further distinctions are needed.

AMEN.

So did anyone actually get a HS magnet acceptance or rejection letter?

They used to be letters; either way. Now are they emails?

then I did not say CogAT was the only factor either. Using CogAT to screen over 1000 applicants to reduce the number that can be further reviewed. Say if there are 1/3 of the applicants who scored composite 80% -- the selection can focus those on others such as awards, grades and map/parcc etc

The above sounds right to me.

The message on the portal says that they will be posted in late January. It’s not late January yet and applications are still being reviewed.
