HS Magnet decisions

If something was said at an information meeting, it would have been about precious years.

Why would the stats be any different this year? It is still opt in test based selection.

I heard that they tested a lot more students than in years past that's why they had to add testing sites.

Because MCPS made the application process easier, e.g., streamlined, no fee, and widely advertised options to current 8th graders compared to previous years. This would lead to more applications. My guess at least 10% more.

that MCPS would not share? I think it is not a secret number right?

What difference does it make?

they are not going to read each of 1000+ applicant's scores/essays/recommendations -- the cogat test acts like a filter to reduce the number of candidates.

You think? So how do you figure they will grade essay on the scale they need to fill?
This is cute. How the Cogat could be the only filter and factor since you can have
tons of students who would score exactly the same in Cogat having the same
amount of questions wrong. How do you pick who gets in then?
Besides, Cogat is something you can prepare to and score higher if you do, otherwise
the test prep centers would go bankrupt. Test can not and is not the only factor,
essays and recommendations and other achievements do have some weight
don't you think? So suggesting that MCPS will just ignore them is really
offensive to the office.

Actually most of this time between the test and announcing the results is probably
spent on grading the essays and reading recs because the Cogat ters results
will have no room for interpretation because numbers will speak for themselves.

We were told in open house that each application packet is read twice.

They haven’t posted the scores and they are currently evaluating applications

Is it the same office that reviews all ES, MS and HS magnet applications?

Is the selection "current middle school" blind ? if so, then they really have to block some grades from report cards because magnet middle school students have their own curriculums

the teacher recommendations are only soliciting from current english/math/foreign language/science/history -- these are same for all MCPS 8th graders

Not sure how they could be blind because as you noted the report card would indicate where the students attend school based on the name of the class and the recommendations would also give the information.

they can certainly regenerate report cards to have the current school name removed and, to have some magnet only classes removed (for example, computer sciences), can they ?

Recommendations can be designed as "English teacher or Math Teacher", so their names are not on the recommendations.

Do you work for the county? "offensive to the office"? Give me a break.
