At what point do I stop fighting the coat battle?

I let kid learn lesson at three. So the battle never started.

I gave up in middle school. My son wore a sweatshirt and shorts until December. He got too hot in school. You have to give kids some independence.

I let my 8 year old pick his fleece/ sherpa- lined hoodies, thermal underwear and down vest and jacket.

That seems to help, i.e. he would wear thermal underwear under shorts and would agree to wear a down vest if it is cold. He will wear a coat if freezing.

He's only 8 though, so we'll see...

my son's high school has no lockers so he has to carry his coat around all day. that's why he never wants to wear the big bulky one. he wears layers these days.

About age 2. In preschool and elementary I would insist it be in a backpack. After that they can freeze .

I remember freezing my butt off when I was younger but I had to look cute. I remember not wearing a coat to the club in the winter because there was no coat check. Wear a hat? No..it could mess up my hair. One day my DD will be a cold old lady in a big ass parka. Til then I'll resist the urge to die on this hill. It's hard. Now I know how my mom felt.
