Why do you rush out to the grocery store when it is about to snow?

I went out tonight because after a previous weekend of non-stop Christmas parties and a crazy week of 2 cookies exchanges, a potluck and our child's Christmas pageant we had next to zero food in our house (which looks like a bomb went off in it). No bread, no eggs, no milk. Sadly it coincided with the pending snow and I spent 2 hours at the store.

I went because I have no kids or husband this wknd. I bought ice cream, horribly bad for me frozen appetizers, brie, bread, shrimp scampi ingredients and wine and beer. Did I NEED to go to the store? Not really. But sometimes it's a good excuse to just buy lay-around-the-house-because-you-cant-go-anywhere food!!!!

And I'm with others - if we get this 15-20 inches they are predicting, we will all be shut down fod 2-5 days!

I had emptied my fridge for my xmas trip tomorrow
And now my trip won't happen, cos the airline called
And aaaaaargh! off into the pre-snow rush I go

Memories of the blizzard of '96...lol
I asked my thenhusband to go to the grocery store once the reports said 15 inches
And he brought home 2 packs of ramen noodles and a a half a chicken.....
Ended up having to go on a 3hr expedition to the store a mile and a half away.....

This is why people thought it might be a good idea to pick up some items at the store.

For food and drink.. why else would we go to the grocery store? I hate cold weather and snow even more. I go to keep from going out until the temp rises again and the snow melts away. I also do the same thing if there is a lot of rain coming.

I go to the store every few days anyway and even if the roads are fine there is still ice out and it is annoying to get out for the grocery store. I actually wonder WHY ppl DONT go to the store when there is any forecasted blizzard. You just never know and better safe than sorry.

The people eating tuna and scraping around to "make do" are either a bunch of killjoys OR they are that alien being who really don't care about food! I'm glad I went out and bought extra milk and marshmallows because I just made a giant pot of hot chocolate that my kids enjoyed after coming in from the snow. If I hadn't bought that extra milk I could have gotten by but would have rationed it out for use on cereal. Now I'm going to make caramel popcorn balls for movie night with the corn syrup I also picked up yesterday. Happiness!

I agree. Who doesn't want a bunch of comfort food on hand during a snow storm.

I planned not to drive this weekend not because I worry about my skills or the roads, but because I know that around here we have a LOT of people who cannot drive well in the snow. I don't know if it's because they grew up somewhere warm and are not used to it? But they really scare me.

That and they have rear wheel drive vehicles. These cars can't handle the snow at all. These are a lot of the people you see stuck trying to go up hills.

It has nothing to do with the drivers, people. They need to learn how to properly *AND TIMELY* salt, sand, and plow here.

But they're just too LAZY to go out in the cold! Where it snows all the time, people are up all night plowing so they don't have to shut the place down. Like the Federal Government shuts down - unbelievable!

I find this a really strange question. To me the snow was an event.

Sort of like saying, "why do you make a special meal on Christmas or Thanksgiving, don't you by the rest of the year on regular food?" Uh, yeah, but it's an event and a special occasion.

When we have a party we go out and by special food. Snow day? (or snow weekend) in the DC area where some winters we don't see any snow? Yes, it's a big deal - and I want special food and it's a great excuse to lock the doors and say - everyone is staying in this weekend! Walkable neighborhood or not, it's fun to have an excuse to stay in.

Usually the snow we get here is a giant pain in the ass. It is just enough to be a hassle getting to work and running errands, but not enough to force everyone to slow down, stay home, and enjoy it. This seemed like it would shut the city down, it did, and it's nice! We had a great day.

It's D.C. Big deals are diminished and small deals are blown way out of proportion. And, any excuse to be lazy.
