I would imagine it could effectively give an individual deemed “suspicious” a legal cause of action if the reporter is not able to justify her/his suspicions within the four corners of this definition. That is, hypothetically, seeing an unrecognized individual slowly strolling on a public carrying a duffel bag at 2am wouldn’t be enough probably. Seeing said person peering into car windows might be sufficient, though.

You got something against duffel bags?

No, but hypothetically it’s a thing into which other items could be placed.

Oh yeah...must be why they're used by so many non-commissioned personnel in the military, and for travel, sports and recreation by civilians.

You’re getting angry about something for no reason and you’re not following. I’m not here to talk about duffel bags in general. I mentioned a hypothetical of why seeing an unrecognized individual carrying a duffel bag on a public sidewalk at 2 am would probably not constitute reasonable suspicion.

To the smart asses... they’re leaving behind valuables like electronics and taking only cash/ coins in the area I’m aware of ...

Exactly. They’ve only taken spare change from our cars.

Now we are sure to lock them every night.

Where’s the diversity? All shades of white?

Where is it? All along the R-B corridor.

There is a bit of a disconnect in these accounts, because no one is going to invest in the kind of signal booster it would take to pull this off and then be content with taking only small change. If that’s all they’re going for, then it’s more likely that people aren’t low locking their cars like they claim.

I think people just forget. Last month, we saw one neighbor even leave a minivan door open at night. (We told them.)

I totally agree, and completely understand how it happens (it’s not like I’ve never left my car unlocked accidentally). I just think some people need to temper the hysteria (here and on NextDoor) to be more in line with what’s actually happening. Kids rifling through unlocked cars to steal pocket change is wrong and shouldn’t happen, but it’s also not a huge safety threat to the community.

Exactly. It’s a nuisance, not public safety issue.

And what to do with private garages? Maybe it's better to install a camera and an alarm system?

We literally have this happen every couple of weeks. All off the stuff will be pulled out of my center console and glove box. I have nothing valuble I'm the car, but it is happening all. the. time. And I promise you that my car is locked. Maybe there is an occasional time we forget, but not on the regular. This is frequent. I was very confused until I heard about the key fob thing.

I don't know the veracity of these claims, but a lot of people say they're buying faraday boxes in which to store their car keys at night.

This is happening. Several times in the last 12 months in the middle of the night I am woken up to my television suddenly being on and the volume super loud. When I trouble shot with customer service/feel squad over something being wrong with my tv, I was told the more likely cause was someone trying a signal booster to unlock the cars in my driveway, as the tv is in the family room right by the wall, next to our driveway. I never occurred to me that a signal booster could also turn on my tv, but apparently they can.

But I have a sign in my yard! That makes me and my white neighborhood allies and diverse, right?
