Why are so many women in their early to mid 20s already so heavy? Is this mainly a USA phenomenon?

Weird you singled out females when it’s just as bad among males.

I was at a restaurant recently and thought a group of guys next to me were all 30s/40s. Nope, they were frat boys. I couldn’t believe how bad they looked for early 20s- overweight, lines on their faces, hunched over posture, etc. I used to think it would be fun to have a fling with a much younger man but now I’m not so sure.

Weight gain used to occur after college graduation after having children but today weight gain occurs before ever setting foot on a college campus.

All my friend married big strong men.

Guess what, they have big muscular daughters.

All their daughters are 2 sizes larger than they were.

and your reaction reeks of misandry. Haven’t you done enough damage to young men without fat shaming.

Whuh? DP here but holy hell your response is completely nonsensical. It's the grown up version of "well, you're a doo doo head." Come on, Surely you can do better.

Not at all. A poster wondered why fat young men were not of concern. I responded that enough damage has been done to young members that fat shaming should not be heaped on them. If you don’t think there is a problem with young men in this country, you “doo doo” have your “head” buried in the sand.

Please tell me what “damage” has been done to young males recently.

First, she didn't ask WHY young men don't get this scrutiny. SHe just flat out said it with no comment.
Please explain how that indicate misandry? And no, you cannot use the voices in your head OR words that are not there to defend your point.

People ended up with a lot more incidents of, shall we say, “intestinal distress” back then, which caused them to quickly lose many of the calories they had eaten in the past 24 hours.

Better food safety practices mean less diarrhea and vomiting, more of the food we eat actually stays in our bodies.

If only....

I have IBS with frequent "intestinal distress." I am NOT thin.

Really? My 60 something year old mil can ‘only eat rice, bread and meat because of her IBS / diarrhea and shes thinner than me! ( Im 5'6 and 143 pounds)

When I was in high school, my friends and I went to the gym, went running, etc and continued that in college. Is that still common among high school kids?

If they are forced to eat dorm food, the food is usually extremely unhealthy hence the term Freshman 15.

[i]Yeah and this isn't exactly new. I went to college in 1995 and the freshman 15 was a phenomenon then too. Add heavy drinking to unlimited dorm food. That doesn't help.

Yeah me too. Difference is that we started at a normal weight and then gained 15 pounds during freshman year. These kids today are starting out fat and getting fatter in college.

Do they start out obsessed with other people and just get more obsessed, or is that only you?

- Snack culture, teaching our kids that they need to eat every two hours, and feeding them high carbohydrate snack foods that are often marketed as organic, no refined sugar, etc
- Overconsumption of liquid calories via Starbucks, smoothies, juices, cheap sodas, etc. Go to other countries and note the portion sizes of liquid calories. Juice is served in a 4 oz max serving. American cars are made with giant cup holders to accommodate what we think of as a normal and necessary consumption of liquid calories. We’re like Wall-E.

Just had this very conversation with my dad. Her response: the new feminism mom! No body shaming allowed. If you like your curves embrace them. When I ask her about health she says it isn’t really talked about. She goes to an all girls school and there are girls who are literally 300 lbs and those girls are excused from sports and allowed to do art. She says it’s not cool to talk about it so no one does.

For some, it also stimulates their appetite and that combined with social drinking makes it even harder to remain slim. Others spent most of their youth playing high level sports or doing competitive dance. If they don’t continue when they get to college, their bodies have a hard time adjusting to the reduced activity level.

antidepressants, ADHD meds, birth control pills, etc...

Those things did not exist in previous decades?

Uh, no, they either didn't exist or were nowhere as common as they are today compared to previous generations.

+1

I don't know a single person who took ADHD or anti-depressants when I was in HS or college.

I know kids who dropped out of my high school and certainly never made it to college who probably could have used ADHD meds or anti-depressants

By 2030, overweight Americans will make up 85% of the population. Even now, 60+% of girls are overweight by age 11. Something is going on, probably many factors, but it isn't good. The cost on the healthcare system will either bankrupt this country or people will be living miserably with no proper healthcare (or probably some combination.)

The statistics show that it is affecting women more than men, but not by huge margins. Men are overweight and obese in unprecedented numbers as well.

Because god forbid we tell them they’re fat when they’re kids. Look at the outrage over the weight watchers app aimed at kids or teens. How dare we tell them they’re fat! Don’t you know they’ll immediately get anorexia if you tell them that?!?

Most people eat garbage all the time. Unclear how they even function beyond the weight. They must feel awful all the time. It’s so depressing.
