Alex Morgan says youth soccer has gotten worse

The only way for poor kids to play for free or very reduced club fees is for the other parents to subsidize the cost by paying more to the clubs for their kids to play.

This is the same reason why our taxes are high so the Feds have money for Medicare and Food Stamps.

You jack@$$. What Alex, Hope and others are saying is that the money that has gone into the sport has made it out of reach for most families. No one is talking about not paying people but the reality is that travel soccer has become an industry and in its current form is excluding many families and hurting the overall soccer scene. DC is the best example. We have way to many travel tms so tht all of the parents can place their DD on a DA/ECNL team and drive or flying around the country playing games and brag to their friends that DD is playing for Bethesda. That is why Bethesda sucks and why the Girls Director left. Parents are destroying the game and DC is a prime example. Hell, before you know it, foreign players will become the main source for college programs. That is already starting to happen and is proof that our system is flawed and not even able to produce enough players to fill spots in our own college soccer programs.

Unfortunately, it is you that do not have a clue. Yes - the elite part of soccer is an industry. The more money that is to be had the more it will become so. Other sports are the same way. It is called real life. Once you grow up and realize how things actually work vs. how they could work in your magical fairy land the better off you will be. Morgan is also lving in a fairy land as she has been a pampered athelete and quasi-super model her entire late teen and adult life. The real world doesn't care about US soccer and foreginers taking our college spots. The real world cares about themselves and themselves only. Understand that and learn how to cope with that and you'll be better off.

There are many posters that interpret things to the extreme and take it as a source of pride that they can spend $12k a year on each kid’s sport.

We are the fortunate that we can, but I am in the group that thinks this is completely nuts. We purposely have avoided joining teams that require this type of thing. I am a former college player and all of these leagues requiring extensive weekly travel are way out of hand. The sport in this area has gotten out of hand and completely lost focus. The kids aren’t better for it. Sitting in buses and traveling hours for practices do not make a better player. My kids are still playing and loving it, but most of their friends that got on the intense hamster wheel young are no longer playing. These parents that love to spend their money on this have lost focus that it has nothing to do with quality or necessity. More ridiculous things are created solely to generate more $, not better soccer.

PP said they have more than 2 kids and that’s OUR fault on why its so hard to do travel soccer. Im sorry but thats life work hard find a way find carpools, family, etc. Everyone has a story but we all find a way. I dont mind paying I KNOW coaches have to eat and fields have to be maintained. Whats next free college education??

You nitwits fail to see that Counties such as Arlington monopolize every available field space. There is zero way for anyone to start their own independent club. Fairfax being much larger has more capability. But you will have nowhere to take your band of disadvantaged players in this area. They don’t even ha enough space for all of their travel teams.

If anyone tries the big Clubs shut them out. It’s a well-known fact certain Clubs/leagues black ball others from joining.

I like to think it’s the people making $ off the parents that are responding that they are so happy to be traveling great distances and shelling out $ with no return, but unfortunately I think the majority of parents with no background in the sport or history are really that stupid. USSF surely banks on that. You can even have actual pros and National players tell you it’s broken- but- nah- you know better. Your little Mia is going to be better than all of those whiners.

Get back to me in 7-8 years— we’ll see what you think then.

My son plays rec soccer in Arlington. There was a kid on his team whose mom took 2 buses from their home to get to practice. I offered to bring him home and did many times, but eventually he stopped coming. It was too hard, and this was rec. I’m not sure the right answer.

You dipsh#ts. The issue is the increased travel and cost. I stated before that my cousin from a family of five kids played travel as did two of his sibblings. The difference between now and 20 years ago is that you didn't have to buy a plane ticket to make a league game and pay a club $4,000 for fees. My cousin played for a top 5 college team. I have other friends who played major sports who did not have the burden of travel and cost that exist today.

You morons who are saying that we should accept it ate true morons. There is no need for any elite team in the DMV to have to travel to SC or MA for a league game. Time to take soccer back from these egocentric jacka $$es.

Exactly. If you are that irritated, don't buy into it. Play rec, or play ODSL or NCSL. These leagues are full of folks like you. If enough ppl do this, the market will adjust.
