PP again (don't like the long block quotes)
Where did you get that number from? The 2005 boys had about 80-ish at the inter-district scrimmages and something like 64 made the state pool. Maybe different in other age groups. Do you work with VYSA as an age group coordinator? Something else to bolster your credibility? And again, the camp was open to the entire state pool. |
My numbers were based on at the time my kids went through and simply comparing the District pool for the age group compared to the State for that year. These were younger age groups with far more overall participation than older years. Kids that don't mkae District or states in the U13/U14 year rarely bother trying out again and the older the age groups get the fewer overall participants. The number of teams they need at the State level to have a viable pool for Regional selection will determine the total number of cuts throughout the year. So yes, if at U16 a total of 40 kids tryout for District ODP almost all will certainly make it to State. If at U13 or U14 90+ kids tryout for District ODP half of those kids will not make it to the State level. And the 40 or so kids that don't make State at U13 or U14 simply don't bother trying out the following year. |
Does this mean that one has to attend the Regional ODP camp to be part of the "regional pool"? Or is the state training performance what determines who makes regional pool? |
I think you're just making stuff up based on your anecdotal experience. I'm done. Regarding whether one must attend the regional camp in order to be selected for the regional pool... Keep this in mind: ODP is a revenue generator for VYSA. If you don't participate in the events and go to the camps, you will not assist VYSA in their goal to generate revenue. You must be a good player to be selected for the region pool, but you must also show a "commitment to the program," which means every time they send you an email, you send them a payment. I heard that there were one or two kids selected for the east region pool this year out of Virginia who didn't go to the camp. But they probably have long track records with ODP and didn't attend because of exceptional circumstances. |
| How much do they charge for ODP now? |
|
There are 70 boys in the '05 Virginia State Pool.
There were just shy of 300 boys in the Virginia District Pools. There were 37 boys from the North District to make the Virginia State Pool. I do not have the North District Pool numbers any longer, but it was over 80 players. |

The talent at the State level is impressive. |
This poster gets it. It's about $$ for VYSA. Everything else is secondary. That should tell you all you really need to know about ODP. |
| Ya down wit ODP, ya you know me ... |
| So let’s say a kid makes it all the way to regionals, then what happens? What’s the end end game? Do they just signup and do it all over again the following year? |
We got out of ODP before going that far, so this is limited, but it appears that after making the region pool a player is given the opportunity to spend even more money on regional training and events. The player is also expected to pay for and participate in all of the district and state training and events. After all, if you can spend $7k/yr on ODP, surely you can spend $13-14k/year on odp. Benefits? It’s a stamp of validation that your kid is a pretty good player. A look for a youth national team? No way. On the boys’ side, your DS would have to move to the DA and, therefore, out of odp for that. The key question is this: are the kids in the odp region pool the best non-DA players in the state of Virginia? No way. |
I understand they need to make money, they have a huge facility with I think 7 fields and two lighted turf fields. The mortgage on that is probably huge, maybe when it is paid off the program will be free to anyone that wants to play. Until then I will just tap into my endless line of credit. |
If you make regional pool that was just announced you will play for a week in Florida this winter. The best players from those events come back again in Jan for the NTC .
