If Your Bethesda/Potomac Kid Goes to Blair Magnet, How Do You Handle After-School Activities?

If you are in closer in Potomac, Bethesda or Rockville this is easier but even if you are farther out people will car pool with you. The other car pool option is to have someone drop your kid off closer to you where you meet up after work. This gets tricky with traffic but can work too.

That's untrue in fact the largest cohort lives relatively near.

You think the program designed to get middle class kids to opt into low demographics schools from nicer areas is mostly filled with the local kids? It is like you’re in denial with who the program is trying to attract with it’s magnet. The only reason people think it isn’t all OOB kids is so many come from the Takoma and Eastern programs which are local.... although filled with lots of OOB kids too. If it wasn’t mostly OOB kids Takoma middle wouldn’t have to set aside 25 seats to ensure some local kids make it into the program.

Just look at the Magnet demographics, they look nothing like Blair’s local population. Just sayin

Most of those middle class are not middle class. If they were they’d be living in those areas do it would be a non issue

You guys are arguing different things. One is saying "not Blair local", the other is saying "relatively near" - can you be more specific: are these "relatively near" students local to Blair or not? If not, then you two have no disagreement.

+1

Plus they learn how to manipulate the school busing so that they take the bus that's nearest to where their activities are.

A couple of years ago we were told (at an admitted students meeting) that the high school cluster sending the most students to Blair is Wootton.

That would not be surprising. It can be any of the good school clusters now. It wold be surprising if people said the largest cluster was Blair itself.

By p. 4 (if not before), the topic of every thread about Blair, becomes: whetherthe students at Blair are Blair students or not.

Very few students from Wooton at Blair because they have a strong cohort there.

It quickly devolves into blair envy.

As a parent of Blair students, i always say my kids are blair students. When asked, my kids will say ‘iI go to Blair.” No one cares you are magnet or nonmagnet students.

People either don't care or they just know.

e.g. when I talk to people around me, if someone says: my kid goes to Blair, the natural assumption would be the Blair magnet. It is hard to say whether they CARE, but they just know.

Blair envy? Maybe within the rest of the DCC but if anybody from a W wanted to attend Blair they would have bought there and saved a ton of money. Why would people think people are envious about something so attainable? Most of them could buy 2 or 3 of the better homes inbounds for Blair for what they paid for theirs.

The magnet is a good program but they have equal access to that and dominate slots many years so... fact is people at the W’s paid a premium to avoid Blair. Not the actions of people who think highly of something

I's been pointed out many times by using race as a proxy for SES that more affluent students even discounting the out of boundary magnet students score substantially higher on SATs at Blair than any W and this is the basis for the envy.
