APS - HB Woodlawn Lottery

Betting most folks on this list know at least one case of no special need / friend did friend a favor and got someone into HB... it is what it is. The rest of us mere mortals are anxiously waiting for the lottery to post!

Based on some of the hand wringing in this thread about the timing and manner of the results, some of you may end up being frustrated by your HB experience. It can be a messy place, but you have to let the magic happen!

How can we apply for pupil placement? Is that common?

Show a legitimate need or know the right person. I know a 7th grader whose mom is friends with an APS administrator. That administrator was the right person.

Kids get in off the wait list. Mine was #5 for our elementary, got in in eight grade. It turned out he was friends with the girl who was #4--she wasn't back at his neighborhood school at the beginning of eighth, then she showed up a week later and told her friends she had tried H-B and didn't like it so she switched back. He realized later that was why the spot opened up for him. But there is movement on wait lists, which may be why kids just show up at H-B in 7th or 8th. The enrollment is capped so the administrators can't just let kids in as a favor. (Also, seriously? Why would they do that?)

No, this was sixth grade. Why would they do that? Friends do friends favors is the only explanation for the case I am familiar with. There was no need.

An APS administrator got two principals to sign off on a transfer form for a kid who didn’t get in through the lottery and the principals were like sure, this is just some friend of yours, cool?

It just updated - we’re on the waitlist but a guess a reasonable shot.

Nothing from HB yet for us. This is 9th Grade.

Does anyone know if your waitlist number for HB is overall for HS or if it’s by school?
Anonymous
Overall. We just got ours (for middle school).
Anonymous
by school as in middle vs high school? Yes. But not by school from which you applied.

I can’t respond to that fully without narrowing down the candidate pool too much, but you’re not far off the mark.

My HB status is still showing as “submitted.” Does anyone have anything different on the portal? Maybe I’m not looking in the right place?
Anonymous
Yes, mine had the waitlist number for middle schooler. That said, APS sent out an email saying that everything was in the process of being updated so it could show up later.

My 9th grader got a spot. It seemed like such a distant possibility that I had forgotten about it and now I’m not sure what to do.
Anonymous
are you sure the wait list is for the whole middle school? I heard it was by elementary.
Anonymous
I'm sorry if this has already been answered, but just to clarify: is the waitlist number for the entire lottery or just from the elementary school your child is in? Meaning, "x" number of students have to give up their spot from your child elementary school or "x" number of accepted kids overall have to give up their spot before your child gets in?

The middle school wait list is by elementary- so you would need a kid from your school to decline in order to move up.

I don't know if it is the same for the HS allocation (by MS or just a big pool)

Rising 6th and 9th - just got a text they were both wait listed, but link does not take you to a page with wait list # just general info about programs.

Zero info in parentvue.

Wtf am I supposed to go to find waitlist #?
