Well, such is life is one-party cities. |
It'll be interesting to see if she sends her child to her IB, Shepherd or another school, public or private. In three years I think her child will qualify for PK3. I'll say I think it's her right to do what she feels is best for her child--just saying that a lot of people will be watching. |
She is Catholic, and attended Catholic schools and a Catholic college. But yes, like all elected officials, her decision will probably be criticized no matter what she does. |
I have to admit, I really truly would like full investment on the part of our elected officials in terms of transit, involvement in the public school system(s), and share our lives? I dislike that they disproportionately don't use transit, bike, or walk. They don't have kids in DCPS, PCS, or have to fight to get into a day care - no nannies, no private schools.
Sharing our lives would help us trust they share our concerns - a DGS you can't trust on construction projects would harm their kids' schooling, not be a problem to manage with construction company cronies. A WMATA that runs trains every 13 minutes after 9:00 am means you're late and can't just park in some random corner near the Wilson building. Scarcity of afterschool would mean you have to get to your kids' school at 3:15 and have to have a work schedule that lets you do that 5 days a week. Grrrrrrr . . . ! ! ! |
How does restricting the the personal choices of government officials help you? So you want the chancellor of a school system to clock out at 3:15 to pick up their kids? The mayor? Should that be for all the men or just the women, to keep that schedule.
I don’t think doctors and nurses who work in safety-net hospitals are restricted in their healthcare coverage options, so why should educators be limited in their school choice. |
Elect people who don't live like you, and you won't have people who understand how you live making decisions for you. |
I think the same kind of blinders were in effect when the Antwan Wilson bypassing the lottery thing blew up. I don't think anyone - including the then-DME - anticipated how much that would enrage people. And if Kihn weren't in a mostly behind the scenes role, his lack of skin in the game would be as much of a scandal. |
He is not behind the scenes. He is center stage. |
Kihn isn't alone in sending his kids to private. Charles Allen is the only CM with school-aged kids who sends them to DCPS. McDuffie's kids are at a private too. |
Cheh and Evans both sent their kids to private. |
I think it's totally unfair to require a public school official to send their kids to a particular school. Especially when there are two custodial parents. Education decisions, like financial decisions, can put a serious strain on parent relationships. BTDT.
That said, I think it's BS for Kihn to claim "commitment to bilingualism" as a reason for his family's choice. He should have just said "it was a personal decision between my wife and me, so MYOB." End of story. Our family has been at WIS and at bilingual public schools. WIS is only immersion through 5th grade. Even then, the level of Spanish skill at elementary level was definitely below our public option. There were plenty of native Spanish speaking parents, but there weren't that many kids. Our public school and EotP neighborhood definitely have a lot more. WIS lower school is in G'town and upper is Cleveland Park. I've heard more Russian and French at pickup than Spanish. If you really want your kids to be fully fluent and biliterate and culturally competent in Spanish, WIS is not a guarantee. It has a lot of great qualities and one of our kids loves it. But there are plenty of WIS parents with kids in public schools, too. Kihn's Spanish language priority explanation sounds a little thin. Unless, of course, they got locked out of all the bilingual lotteries and priced out of OA boundary. Then I'd have a lot of sympathy for them. |
I thought Cheh sent her kids to Murch? |
I feel the same about the people who sit on the Metro board - they should be required to metro to work. |
Briefly. GDS for the most part. |
And Jack daughter attended Deal? |
