I take 25 students to lunch. On a typical day I'd say 2 to 4 eat school lunch. Even if it was free I doubt many more than that would eat school lunch.

Not true. We are in Vienna and a lot of kids buy lunch including mine. It’s convenient. Our school is not on that list and does not need to be.

How is what I wrote not true? My post was about my experience at my school, not your school in Vienna. I take them to lunch every day. On average 2-4 will eat school lunch and I’d bet most would still pack even if it was free.

Sorry I wasn’t clear and came off as rude. I believe it is true for your school. I meant it’s not true that children are not interested in eating or even buying the school lunch. My children were very excited for pizza day today.

They are nutritious now and largely go untouched by many students. At our school, those who receive a free lunch are required to take one. If they skip the line that day, an attendant brings a tray to them. Even if they don't want it, that's the rule. And then it gets thrown away untouched. These are kids who get bags of food to carry them over the weekend (mostly junk food, like, boxed mac & cheese and Chef Boyardee) and are known to be food insecure. Hungry kids would rather go hungry than eat the garbage given to them... that's sad.

Lol. I checked out my local school's lunch menu which markets 'nutritious food' but it's still crap like pizza and corn dog. Just because it's whole grain doesn't make it nutritious. This country has a very warped idea of nutrition.

Np- they won’t eat “nutritious” lunches. How are you not getting that?

Dd’s Old school did free breakfast for all. She would eat it once a week when they had cinnamon buns but otherwise ate at home.

I am surprised by the pp who said lots of kids at her school buy lunch every day of the week. I let mine pick one day because it is basically fast food so not healthy to eat every day.

The privilege on this thread is astounding.

Thanks for checking back. I appreciate it. I don't know if my students are interested in the scoop lunch, but I doubt if the number who eat it would increase much if it was free. For all but 2-4, parents would still pack their lunches. My DW says the same. I asked and she said probably 3/4 of her students pack their lunch.

Pretty sure it is actually Woodburn. We got a notice home about it. I, too, was surprised. This is our first year here though, so I don’t know all the areas zoned for the school. Thus far we love our neighborhood AND the school. We don’t need the free meals, but I am glad the kids that do are getting them.

It makes the breakfast and lunch lines move a lot faster since students no longer have to enter their PIN number at the end of the line.

Yeah, and it’s really improved the schools in Baltimore, hasn’t it? Bet it will only accelerate the flight of non-FARMS families from those schools.

Wow, you are pretty heartless. So we should only feed kids on the taxpayer's dime IF it increases test scores?

Giving even more free stuff to families in those areas and having the schools show up as 100% FARMS on state reports certainly won’t improve those neighborhoods. Teaching personal responsibility might.

If those hungry 5 year olds would just take a little more personal responsibility, amirite?

I’m sure you’re a a trump supporter, too.

I’m a male ES teacher and could easily find 12 moms who are calendar worthy. It should be just as easy to pick out the dads.

In Vienna, too. My kids have never bought lunch after trying it 3 times.

I admit, mine buy because I’m being weak and lazy. They like the extras and it adds up. Sometimes DS is spending $6 or more some days and I know his friends also buy the pretzels, cookies or ice cream. They add these onto the lunch. My children eat healthy food the majority of the time and I’m tired from working. Buying a lunch is helpful so I don’t have to pack anything, or check that they packed enough. I’m sure they would both want to stop if they were limited to only lunch without the extra junk. Same for their friends.

Back to OP, I’m glad the children who need a free lunch have one available. Our school does not need this for every child.

There isn’t one.
All kids eat free.

That is great.
