Immigrants or ILLEGAL immigrants? Stop conflating the two.

Another DC resident. I am not fine with it. Muriel sucks. I’m so upset that not one credible person chose to oppose her for re-election. Actually the majority of DC city council is downright awful. Before you ask, I live here for the convenience only.

She must be socializing with the MoCo politicians. There are certainly enough DC residents to work jobs there. And with a $15 an hour minimum you’d think people would drive in for jobs there. One of my relatives and many friends drive in from MoCo for the $15 min. Why would you need to go to El Salvador to find a workforce??

Every parent at our EoTP school has been asked to donate a ream of printer paper. so DCPS really doesn't even supply the basics.

Another example of how the DC government "reams" DC school parents and taxpayers.

I see what you did there.

Ha ha

That money could be spent on the rat problem. Our rats rival NY and the budget is about a million dollars (believe they are adding one more million after recent Post investigation) and 9 employees in deppartment. That seems paltry and neglectful in a city this size, but Mayor and Counil seem to find so much money for pet prjects. Forget public health and ocmfort.

Like politicians you are never going to get rid of rats. They are plentiful and super smart. Invest in an animal proof trash can and otherwise make sure that they don’t have a good source near your house or business and move on.

What a can't do attitude. There is plenty that can be done to minimize rat infestations and allow children to play in their own back yards at dusk--which they can't do in many quadrants of the city. I'm guessing you are associated with Bowser or the Council.

Clean up your trash. Don’t feed the birds or any other animal. Rats settle in where there is a good source.

You can clean up your trash. If it isn't picked up as often as posaibke, if the garbage can is chewed through, if they are popping out of sewers, if there are food scraps from restaurants it is a problem. This is a city wide problem that requires city wide solutions, beyond the person feeling bothered cleaning up their trash.

You need the Toter trash cans (sorry but they are $90 or so each) to get the kind that they can’t eat through. And then you need to somehow keep the kid shut - heavy brick of maybe a strap. People who live in rural areas manage to keep the raccoons out - by literally locking their trash cans - surely DC can keep the ears out. Perhaps Mayor Bowser can stop traveling to El Salvador and spring for Toter trash cans and can locks for all city residents.

For serious varmint proofing people build these trash can boxes down by the curb and lock them:

That's the point. There are many things that can be done from better trash cans to more frequent trash pickups to enforcing how restaurants (one of the main culprit in DC) dispose of their trash, to better types of extermination and control. All this costs money of course, but Muriel seems to prefer to spend it on other causes.

There is a Republican running for at large councilmember. Consider using your vote for him. That would send a message to the mayor and other councilmember that opposition is possible. I would expect a republican in DC to be more responsible with taxpayer money and pay attention to bread and butter issues that affect residents.

I'm an immigrant, and Hispanic. I'm part of the economy. And I think Bowser is a bad joke -- as corrupt as previous DC politicos if not more, and with close to zero Hispanic or Asian or other immigrants in any position of power in her team (that I can think of, please enlighten me).

+1, The money is for legal help, with a focus on helping folks apply for US citizenship.

How about both. I support the legal services and think that Muriel sucks. So there you go.

The majority are illegal. I know tons of them. Their entire life is a lie. They commit fraud over and over again and cannot keep their lie's straight. Some of these people come from educated families and are not facing danger or poverty back home. They told me they came here for the handouts and to become millionaires. They said it makes no sense to stay in their country when they can come here and get everything they need without paying. The belief is we owe them everything. The problem is they implode themselves. They don't want to follow our rules and then wonder why hey are unemployable. No one can tell them what to do. They refuse to do the most basic functions of their jobs. The mentality is they can finance cars, an education, credit cards and don't have to pay anything back if they don't have the money. They truly believe this should not be held against them or go on their credit report. To them it's racist and all Americans are out to get them.

Anonymous wrote:Isn’t this a pro-illegal immigrant area? These people are fleeing gang violence in their home countries and coming here for a better life. They are sending their children across the border after traveling hundreds of miles in dangerous situations.

So you hate the gov’t for enforcing immigration laws as long as they don’t show up in your town looking for help.

Liberal NIMBY at its finest.

Hello - the gang violence has followed them here.

Legal immigration that is well thought out is fine. Disorganized illegal immigration is not.

Exactly. And now it's the US's problem. Not just El Salvador's.

Yeah but let all the dreamers in

We should be spending some time and yes money on fixing things in these countries, not just bringing people here. That makes no sense as the line of people ‘fleeing their country’ will never end. And wouldn’t it be better to have legal immigrants coming here who haven’t been subjected to terrible violence first? None of this makes any good sense. It appears that the US wants damaged, desperate people so that they can underpay them which is just immoral and gross.

Yes, let's go "fix" the whole world, that always works out so well, and is a much better use of tax dollars than fixing the failing schools of DC.

I'm black and a DC resident. I believe in legal services for immigration. I also believe Muriel sucks and cannot actually understand why her administration is not more diverse. However, she is known to be petty and mean so maybe it's good.
