You sound pretty confused yourself. Property taxes are only low for houses owned for decades -- if you buy a house now, taxes are way higher than in DC. And the real problem with schools is not funding, but a crazy city-wide lottery system designed to satisfy single SJWs and penalize parents. |
LOL. Moving to the bay area because of a 50k increase. Good luck OP. |
I wouldn’t move to the bay area without a combined income of at least 400k. 240k is pretty low (for the bay area). |
OP here. It could be 70k jump relative to our current salary with bonus. I think we are leaning towards the move, but obviously downgrade lifestyle. I have lived in the Bay area before. |
Hell. To. The. No! I moved with my tech company FROM SF to Reston, Va when we opened our east coast headquarters. My quality of life is so so much better now. I have no, and I mean no commute, I have a beautiful SFH and my kids go to great schools. I'd need a 500k bump to get in SF that I get in Reston. I'm so glad to be out of there and so glad not to deal with the onslaught of homeless and drug addicts. |
You are still young and you should do it. But please don't do it just because of the 50k pay bump. This won't go far in San Fran.
Do it for the huge potential and opportunities for career growth that this will afford you. Today it is 50k, tomorrow it could be 400k. There is no better place to be if you work in Tech. |
Which schools? |
Might not even cover your tax bill. You might keep an extra 10k. Maybe. |
Do it, OP. Having a big home isn't everything. If you both work in tech, make the move and move up the ladder. Live in a place far more beautiful than DC. Go go go. |
Oakton/Thoreau/Madison |
Having a big home has nothing to do with it. You wont enjoy the beauty.most people are on the road for hours a day, the COL is outrageous. A 50-70k bump is peanuts out there and will be a downgrade. No way in HELL will the OP get close to SF of shoes living in SS now on that income. If OP thinks 70k is a lot for a bump, shes not making the 500k+ it takes to live in SF. And the schools? Awful. Awful awful. |
+1 no way would I move |
100% agree more doors will open |
This. I only received a small bump in pay when I moved to NY but it had a huge impact on my career. |
Stop exaggerating. Millions of people live in the Bay Area and they don’t all make.500k |
