Do your local deli people get annoyed when you ask for shaved meats?

PSA here. Stop eating processed meats. Huge, and I mean HUGE cancer risk.

I worked in a full service meat department of a large grocery chain. I was amazed at how many people working there had no idea even what "shaved" meat meant. Even the meat manager was irritated when I asked a customer if they preferred it shaved or just super thin without falling apart, when they asked if I could slice it as thinly as possible. He said (after the customer left) what the hell is shaved? Don't even talk about that. So, i did anyway. Because it is the BEST way to eat deli meats. It does NOT ruin the flavor, nor does it ruin the texture, in fact it improves the texture because most deli meats are now rubbery substitutes for what real food was when I was a kid 50 years ago. Anyway, I had no problem shaving the meat. One pound of shaved meat takes only a minute or so longer, so those getting irritated are idiots and those getting worn out arms need to invest in automatic slicers. No arm work needed.

I worked in a deli once too and hated this request. Super time consuming as you have to wrap and unwrap each meat and then clean the slicer between uses. The worst was when people would ask for 1/4 of 5 different meats.

I don't get this. You work at a deli. This is really all you have to do and I'm pretty sure that you are paid hourly. Its not like you have work overtime and not get paid because of someone ordering shaved meat. You don't have work to take home.

What difference does it make if you spend your time shaving meat, cleaning the slicer, filling the trays, or scooping something.

Thanks for pointing out that you don’t eat deli meat. Every dcum post should be about how slim and virtuous the poster is.

I just asked for a shaved lb of ham last week and got the same reaction. The funny thing was, I haven't bought deli meats in years and I was craving bologna, so I decided to get my husband what he likes too. I really didn't even realize it would be manual or take so long, so when we got to the 1/2 pound mark, I told her that would be enough. It sucks but I guess it's not worth making the employee hate her life.

I don't get your post. If you're getting paid the same, wouldn't you want to spend your time doing the easier tasks? I'm a nurse, I get the same hourly rate whether I have 5 independent patients or 5 total care patients. Guess which one I would prefer most days?

I could be wrong but I'm guessing that the range of your various nursing tasks are more involved and complex than working at a deli counter.

Shaved? One guy at our deli will not even slice it thin. No matter what you say, he slices super thick. I have stopped buying deli meat.

So many things about this thread!

1. The deli workers need to be pleasant and do their jobs. I am cheerful and helpful in my profession always even if whatever my task is, is a PITA.

2. Shaved meat is the best.

3. I miss Wegmans and will be glad to have them close to me in a few years.

4. I am going to get some shaved turkey and ham tomorrow.

5. To the "shaved and waxed" poster - you are a dirty bird!

Shaved like saw dust or shaved like paper thin?

I've only had cold cuts a few times in my life, but when I did I always thought it tasted better as thin or shaved as possible. I don't get the big deal. No one wants to choke on big chunks of meat.

I mean she works in a deli. Isn't her job to save meat? She should probably find a different occupation. My deli always asks me how I was it cut. My family won't eat thick cut either.

For meats that can be tough & chewy like corned beef and ham, it makes it very tender / easy to chew.

I always get my corned beef shaved and have gotten attitude a few times. I find it happens less as I get older. Maybe I go to better stores now, or maybe I seem like a better customer.

Or maybe you are at the store at less busy times.

It's literally her job to slice deli meat.
