Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS)
| this is scary to me - we live where the kid would go to Franklin MS, which sent 3 to TJ, but since DC is in a GT center that feeds into Carson, DC will be going to a middle school that sent 68 kids to TJ. That's a big difference! I'm not sure the AAP program is such a big deal at the ES level, but once you get to middle school, in some cases, it can be a big deal academically speaking. |
I'm not sure the school is such a big deal versus the kids who go to the school. If all of those AAP kids went to Franklin Middle School instead of Carson, most of the same ones who got into TJ would still get into TJ. To give you an example, a few years ago, the AAP middle school for most of Vienna changed from Kilmer to Luther Jackson. Several parents chose not to send their children to Jackson and went to their base middle school instead (Thoreau). Others decided to choose Jackson. If you look at the sending schools this year, you can see the effect of this move. Kilmer now has fewer going on to TJ (47 to 55 in the previous 3 years versus 34 this year). Jackson has several more (10 this year versus 0-8 the prior years) and Thoreau (not an AAP school) has 8 versus between 1 and 4 the prior 3 years. Of course, that isn't scientific, but for the most part the kids who are smart enough to go to TJ will get in no matter what middle school they are in.

By golly...parents not wanting to send their kids to a more racially diverse school (Jackson). I'm shocked! |
| To the "snobfactor" post - McLean is closer to work than living farther out. And being close to town is nicer for a number of reasons, plus there is the bonus that the location is also close to the best public and private schools in the area. So we have great choices no matter what. |
| Also, jacson is further from Vienna...from my house Kilmer or thoreau are about 10 min, Jackson, 20 min. and for our location, kids here walk to Madison. |
You missed the point. The point that someone was making was that if you're living in McLean, what's the point of sending your kids to mediocre catholic private schools if you're not catholic when the public system is better......if you're going to send your kids to mediocre private schools, you might as well live in a less expensive area. |
What does this have to do with anything? Anyone getting into Jackson AAP would be provided bus service. |
Defensive much? |

A school that's perceived as "better" by some people may or may not actual be better or the best choice for your child.
My children are still very young so HS is many years down the road. We live in the Langley HS district. Langley is perceived as a good/great school. Will it be the HS our children attend? I have no way of knowing. If a different HS (such as a smaller school) better suits one of our children, I hope we have the means to send the child there. Regarding TJ, I really hope my children can get through elementary school without knowing about TJ and/or striving to get in. It seems a little ridiculous to have prep classes for the TJ entrance exam! I can't remember where I saw the prep classes listed, but they cost $$$. Excuse me for digressing. TJ is no doubt an excellent school but certainly not the best school for every HS student. |
| tj or potomac school? |

My DC is in the GT Center Program at Kilmer (cooper is our base school, Kilmer our GT center) and is in a class of 9 kids in Algebra 2 Honors in 8th grade. EVERY KID in the class got into TJ - 4 whites, 5 Asians. THREE of the non-Asian kids turned down TJ to go the private school route. A good percentage of kids in Geometry Honors got in to TJ, too. The GT Center kids unfortunately have more of an advantage because they will all be in Geometry Honors or higher in the 8th grade. They also tend to all be kids pretty well versed in English, too, which helps with the essay portion. While I agree that Kilmer

, Carson and Longfellow are " feeders", I think as long as it's a GT Center MS and offers high level math classes, along with challenging English classes, your child will have a good prep for the TJ process.

do you know which private schools they chose over TJ and why? |
| Yes ----the girl got into Sidwell and her mom told me she wanted a smaller class size, and the one of the boys (according to one of the mothers) thought he wouldn't fit in. Not sure about the other boy. But they all took the summer Geometry course to be in that class, so they all must have started out wanting to go to TJ. |
| Uh, choosing Sidwell Friends (what does that run, $35k?) over a FREE school that's #1 in the country?? Stupid choice if you ask me (my DS goes to TJ). They'll regret that choice come college application time! Maybe the other kid felt out of place because he wasn't asian |

The anti-Asian sentiment on this site is disgusting.
