What was your strategy for making college more affordable? Live in VA vs. MD?

Schools aside, we really love living in Virginia. We're in NOVA but feel that we're (physically, mentally) removed from the so-called pressure cooker environment of "inner-NOVA." Our kids went to an excellent public high school that challenge them and helped them grow, we have easy access to anything we want to do (whether it be going into DC or down to Charlottesville or Richmond for big cultural events or hiking in Shenandoah or skiing or enjoying wineries or anything), the taxes are lower, life is good! We were so lucky to have all these amazing options of VA public colleges for our kids when the time came. There really is something for everyone. One DC is at UVA and is thriving beyond our wildest dreams, and the other is doing the same at another non-UVA/W&M public. And they get to do it for a (relatively) reasonable price!

Md is ranked ahead of Va in education, per capita income, quality of life, education level of citizens.

Thats why all the best privates, country clubs and most billionaires live in Md.

OP is unnecessarily making this MD vs. VA. Strategies are simple OP - you save, save, and save some more. There is no simple way.

But when there are annual studies of which state states are the “richest”, as in has the most income per capital or most taxes collected per capita (and hence more money to spend on infrastructure, schools, programs, etc) Maryland is consistently in the top 5, usually top 3 and Virginia is consistently in top 10. Ever drive across 95 or 85 south into NC or 81 into TN and see how the roads change immediately, trash on side of the road, etc. Those quality of life studies are so subjective, but numbers are what they are.
