Boss found out I'm leaving before I gave notice and before bonus hit

Once you've accepted an offer, it isn't shocking that a company/firm would contact your old firm to confirm employment. They would expect you would have provided notice once you've accepted their offer.

You decided to leave before bonuses were paid. I would have cut it to zero.

Don't you have a contingency with a bonus?
My company does - I can't quit within 6 mo of receiving my bonus. Same goes when I took an continuing education course, went to a conference, etc.
