| Are you under the impression that the Ivies don't? These are businesses. |

If you’re an undergrad it’s meaningless how many Nobel winners or top ranked departments Chicago has.
Dartmouth and Chicago are traditionally very different schools with very different vibes. If you only care about WS then go to Dartmouth. If WS is not a priority then go with the vibe that appeals to you the most. If only caring about prestige then Dartmouth beats Chicago from a layman’s perspective. The layman does not care if Chicago has more Nobel faculty and if applying to grad or professional schools by no means is a Dartmouth graduate considered lesser than a Chicago graduate. |
| Four years in a crappy part of Chicago vs. the bucolic upper valley? That's a no brainer. |
| Everyone I know who went to Chicago is fucking brilliant. A little depressive, but brilliant. They are never bored by their own thoughts. |
Not quite. It still attracts a disctinct crowd compared to the ivies. Sure many tiger cubs apply but most of the people who actually choose to enroll are not interchangeable with the people who enroll at the ivies. |
| I think that's true. You cannot opt out to be intellectually lazy at uChicago. No way that won't be noticed. |
| Crappy area is what I thought too a few years ago. Next time you're in Chicago, take a beat and look at Hyde Park. Revitalized. And of course the campus is beautiful. For kids who like suburban and city campuses, it's a great place. Dartmouth is in a very pretty area but too isolated for some kids. Good thing there are options to fit all tastes. |
Hyde Park is not a crappy part of Chicago. In fact, it is a lovely and pleasant part of Chicago with two great little bookstores, lake access, a brand new Whole Foods, and lots of new restaurants. |
| Surrounded by great student wallet friendly food on all sides too in addition to the new restaurants opening up right in Hyde Park. I should have bought real estate. |
OK...fair enough. I haven't been to UC in over 10 years so my take on the area is outdated. |
| I envy Hyde Park’s cafes, bakeries, and bookstores. |
One summer, I swam at The Point everyday while looking north at the Chicago skyline, and it was so lovely that it was worth the moderate intestinal distress I experience all summer (which magically disappeared when I stopped swimming in the lake). |
OK? You can't do that at Dartmouth, either... |
Swimming in raw sewage overflow. Awesome. |

It's just anecdotal but I know multiple families whose kids had the choice, parents preferred the UChicago eduction and ultimately went with Dartmouth because their kids thought it would be easier and they ddn't think want to work that hard. I've heard that Dartmouth holds your feet to the fire more than other Ivies but I think it takes kids challenged by vs afraid of the UChicago rep to enroll. (The reality is that like any college, the classes vary but they are all small even as freshman so they can't hide in a lecture hall crowd ) |
