How about, because you're not using it? |
The message will show as "read" if the person has it set to show on their locked home screen. Example, your message pops up on my screen, I push my button to check the time on my phone, which will show your message and the other notifications on my screen, but I don't actually look at it or read it. It's going to show that I read it at 10:25 AM, but really I just checked the time or swiped to unlock my phone to do something else. |

Because I was driving
Because I was in the shower. Because I was watching my child's gymnastics meet. Because I was having sex. Because I was trying to focus and turned off my ringer. Because you text too much and I need a break. Because I'm napping. Because I'm reading. I'm in a doctors appointment. I'm in an AA meeting. Do you need anymore? |
|
When I have Do Not Disturb on, I don't see it. Then it just gets buried under 10 other text messages.
|
| I think they are busy and/or ADD. |
Actually no. You have to either physically swipe the notification, or go into your messages for the read receipt to activate. Avoid doing these things and avoid looking like an ass. |
| Because my phone is on silent or airplane mode 96% of the time. Because I'm not glued to my phone. Because I have a kid to take care of. |
Ok mommy martyr of an only child
Some of us have to, you know, answer emails and be on calls and stuff. Or coordinate childcare logistics for the kids we aren't glued to. |
| I have texts turned off. I tell almost everyone I know, but sometimes new people try to text me. I literally do NOT get any texts sent to me. Unfortunately, the phone does not send back a message to the sender along the lines of, "This person does not receive texts," or anything like that, but I try to tell everyone I know: just email me, call me, whatever. I don't text. I am 44. |
Are you 65 years old? No job, no kids? I am trying to imagine a lifestyle in which I didn't need to be responsive to calls or texts for two days at a time, or leave the house for days. |
You literally don't know how to text, or you won't pay for it? |
I have one extremely busy friend. I would respond at a conventionally rapid pace to her texts; she would read mine and respond with an email a week later. So I started taking a week or so to respond to her texts. Guess what? We are both happier. She was telling me that she wasn't going to respond on a priority basis, so now I don't either. |
I won't pay for it, and I don't like it, so I don't pay for it. It's kind of a circular thing. Not sure which is the more determining factor. But I both a) don't like texts and b) don't want to pay for texts. |
How long does it take you to respond to emails, and do you have a smartphone so you can read emails when you are out of the house? |
It depends upon the time of day as to how fast I respond to emails. I work in the mornings so I can respond to emails then super-quickly. But in the afternoons, when I am picking kids up from school, running around to extracurriculars, I am out of pocket (email-wise) so the most immediate way to get in touch with me during those hours is call my cell phone. No, I do not have a smart phone. I have an old "dumb" phone. Then, in the evenings, once dinner is over, kids are down, etc. I am back on computer or iPad and can respond quickly again, until bedtime. I like having my brain "turned off" once I leave work and then I have all afternoon to be present for my kids and home life, etc. |
