Why do you need a non-stop?

Great wine, Mediterranean feel and lots of hiking, mountains, rivers, castles and medieval villages. Youd Can get to Spain on a long day trip or go for longer to explore. You can get to the ocean if you want for beach time with the kids. The small villages have rentals that would be cheaper than the big cities. I'm guessing September would be lovely.

+1. My mom is there right now - staying at a friend's villa and having a fabulous time. Very family friendly.

+2 I was going to suggest Montpellier, which is beautiful and a good base for some easy day trips!

OP, please come back when you know what you're going to do. I'm sure I'm not the only one living vicariously through you right now. A one month sabbatical sounds like a dream.

I second the Crete suggestions. Great place, lots to explore, like Elofinissi.

If I had the time and money, I personally would head to a nice quiet place in the Caribbean and live the island salt life for a month. Enjoy sailing and exploring. And since it's hurricane season, tourist crowds would be low, and rental costs will be rock bottom, so a lot of bang for your buck. St John and/or the BVIs for a month would be a dream.
