I second the recommendation for Mexico City. Your money will go a lot farther. You could get a really niceg apartment, a housekeeper/part time nanny and eat amazing food and see amazing art and sights |

You could cap it off with a week at the beach or even go to the beach in the middle and just leave your apartment in Mexico City empty because it's so cheap. |
| OP here, I love the Mexico City suggestion!! I didn't realize it was a good place to bring kids. Thanks for the tip!! |
| Would worry about crime in Mexico City (a place I love) more than other places mentioned. |
| Santiago or Buenos Aires |
Yes, but $$$$$$! |

Hey OP, do you work for a software company by any chance?
My son does and he is currently on the French Riviera for his 4 week sabbatical. His company offers this paid perk after 5 years employment. |
I think a lot of new companies are offering the 5-year sabbatical perk! It's not a software company, but I know a lot of companies that do this. Mostly startups. True about Japan being $$$. I also just peeked at some places on the French Riviera, and for a nice house with a pool most were asking upwards of $20-35k/month!! I'm back to thinking that Portugal may be more our speed, cost-wise.

Cape Town, South Africa. It's not much more expensive to get to than Europe (thought flights are LONG), and very cheap once you get there.
The views are stunning, and there are a lot of things to do that are fun for the family: sightseeing beach penguins game drives wineries etc.. |

Costa Rica could work for the Spanish, hiking, and family friendliness, plus direct flights. Food is not known like Italy or Spain, but is good and fresh. Lots of expats and good quality health care.
Argentina could be good for wine and such. There are now direct flights between Dulles and Delhi, making India an option. That can be a stressful place to travel though. Iceland could be fun but food and wine are not great there. And a month could be right if you like to take things slow or take short hops other places, but might feel like too much time in a small country. How about Israel? I liked the food, there is good medical care, and you could do short trips to Egypt and Jordan too. |

Buenos Aires is awesome.
Japan is expensive and you will not get a decent amount of space. Also, language can be an issue there. |
Do not do India with small kids. - An Indian Person |
+100000. Can do a nonstop from atl or nyc. |
PP who posted the Washington post article above. My family and I (two kids, 2 and 5) live in Mexico City. I don't think the crime and security issues outpace any other big city for the average expat/tourist family. I'd also think about the community you will be joining. We've found it much easier to make friends and community connections quickly here than in other places we've lived. |
You could get an amazing apartment in Mexico City for less thanks $3000 for the month! |
