If your parents expected you to go to college, how many campuses did you tour/visit?

I visited two colleges for their admitted students scholarship weekend, during which I was interviewed by a committee and stayed the night with an existing student. One of those colleges paid for us to visit, the other did not.

Other than that, I didn't tour or visit any of the other 7 schools I applied to. But, I grew up about 3000 miles away from any of the schools I applied to, so visiting was an expensive venture.

+1. Biggest waste of time. Only done by parents living through their kids, so they can brag at work and on facebook about visiting Princeton.

This really surprises me. Two tours we've taken so far caused DC to scratch the school off the list. Kid found one place too "bland," and didn't like the seriousness/frowns on the student's faces at another. Not going to force DC to go to a school the kid just doesn't like. You can only find this out by visiting when school is in session. Luckily kid did really like a third school that seemed quite welcoming and seems a good fit.

I have never heard such utter idiocy. Maybe there was a class of students who had received bad news. Maybe they were focused on something very serious. You don't dismiss an academic institution on the fact you saw a few frowny kids. That's lunacy.

I'm the PP that wrote that, and I said the exact same thing to D.C. The response I got was that was it wasn't "a few kids", rather it was the whole vibe on the campus. Not going to force DC to go to a school they just don't like.

^ but the point is you only will find this out by visiting during the school year. It could have been a big mistake.
