There's no reason that before care must be provided by guides - in most school it is lower paid aides who do it for precisely the reasons listed above.

It may not break even, but schools need to do this to accommodate all families, current and future.

Other than the school's board of directors, none of those people can really do anything or have to care about your opinion. It's the flip side of less accountability for charter schools. There's no elected official to address your concerns with.

When a charter is changing things they stated in their application, the DCPCSB will ask questions and can push back. And their before/after care plans were front and center and related to their commitment to serve families of all income.

I think that they still have before care, it is just 8:00am - 8:45am. School doesn't start until 8:45, right?.

No, that is breakfast family style for the school. It is not considered before school. The ED said as much. The point is not that its school and not day care. Not everyone has a job that starts at 9. They should have told people before the common lottery. They do this a lot.

I think the before care is an issue as a lot of non-white collar workers need to be at work before 8 AM.

You maybe exaggerating a little. Our Title 1 school around the corner doesn't open up until 8:15 and parents make it work.

because they leave their children out front, unattended.

Our DCPS which is just around the corner from Breakthrough doors open up at 8:15. Before the new principal arrived, doors opened at 8:10.

Parents were in a fuss over 5 minutes, but managed later on.

Where are you getting this information about BT? I haven’t heard any of this. They currently don’t have before care but will be opening at 7:30 am next year. And where did you hear about the price increase for aftercare??

They open at 7:30 this year. They said there wouldn’t be opening, but changed their mind and provide before care. Why did someone resurrect a zombie post?

ha! We attend that school and you are absolutely right. At times I wish I could just leave mine, but I changed my tour to be in at 9:30 with a 30 minute lunch instead of the full hour.
