How to get rid of cats on my patio furniture?

Anonymous
None of my family members are allergic to bird poop.

You watch your child be unable to breathe from your cats presence on my porch then get back to me:

OP here. This is why I didn't post on the Pets forum. The cats aren't my pets and my family likes sitting on the porch. I don't want to tilt my furniture everyday. Is there anything I can spray on the seats?

Hot pepper powder is really effective, but not on furniture, of course. It took one application to keep them from using a flower bed by my front door as litter box, the stench was unbearable!

If your porch is covered, you can use an electric pad that produces mild electric shock when jumped on

Its harmless, and Cats are too smart to repeat the same mistake.

These cats are obviously much smarter than OP.

its ok for us to trap, poison and kill pests.

put out a bowl of the green antifreeze... and poison the pest. or set a trap baited with tuna and take it to the pound. knowing full well that the pound will eventually kill it..

Animal control won't euthanize them- the owners have a certain amount of time to claim them then they are put up for adoption. As long as you aren't keeping them in traps for extended periods of time, it's perfectly humane.

I like cats and own one, but they really shouldn't be allowed outside, especially if they leave their yard. It's terrible for both the cat and wildlife. Billions of birds are killed by cats every year. Just a couple weeks ago we saw a neighborhood cat that had been struck and killed by a car. Outdoor cats have also been shown to have much shorter lifespans.

Dogs aren't allowed to wander the streets, cats shouldn't be either.

Cats and dogs are very different animals. Apples and oranges.

Like comparing a monkey to a goat.

Neither monkey nor goat nor cat nor dog should be roaming the streets unattended.

I would use the mothball approach, or some other anti-cat spray. I wouldn't have thought to call animal control but more power to you if that works.

I don't think you understand how animals or nature work, do you?

Wildlife and pets are different. No pets should be wandering the streets- dogs, cats, hamsters, goats, pigs, parrots, whatever.

Plus, when wildlife are a nuisance on personal property, it is legal for them to be trapped (by a professional wildlife exterminator in many states).

Can you site the code or law stating that a cat cannot enter a yard or walk across your lawn. If this were the case I think outdoor cats would be illegal across the board.

How do you deal with bird & squirrel poop or deer eating your garden?

Yes, I can:

https://beta.code.dccouncil.us/dc/council/code/sections/8-1808.html

§ 8–1808. Prohibited conduct.

(a) No owner of an animal shall allow the animal to go at large.

That law does not include cats, but you can verify with animal control.
I was in the same situation, neighbor's cats were killing birds on my back yard, I was hoping that animal control can force the owners to keep cats indoors. Nope, no luck.

Airsoft machinegun.

It won't cause any longterm harm, but you'll put the fear of cat-God into them after the first time you hit them with it.

Thank you, reasonable person. Lol.

This is actually a good idea even aside from the cat issue. I am neither a cat owner nor a cat hater, but always bring my porch cushions in when not using them. Although they are advertised as weatherproof, I've found that it really does help them last longer, stay cleaner, and look better.

I hope you get rid of cats and then snakes sun themselves on your patio chairs!

OP here. I don't want to put the cushions away because 1)I am too lazy to put them away every time someone finishes sitting on them. 2) I don't have any space to store them. 3) my mom watches my kids after school and she loves sitting on the porch and reading the paper while my kids play outside. She gets annoyed when cat hair gets over her pants and sweaters. I am not going to make my 75 year old mom haul cushions onto the patio every afternoon. I appreciate her watching my kids while DH and I work and want to keep her happy.
My 8 year old likes the neighborhood cats so I don't want to call animal control, trap them, or complain to our elderly neighbors (the cat's owner). There has to be some kind of spray that deters cats but is harmless to kids. I also am sad that we used to have birds that built a nest in the rafters of our porch every spring. They haven't gone back I think because of the cats. We have found a couple of dead birds on our lawn too. I assume the cat(s) are killing them.

Rats too!

There are devices that emit a loud, horrible sound when a small animal goes to sit on a couch, and I assume the porch is covered. ://www.amazon.com/PetSafe-ScatMat-Training-Large-inches/dp/B0007NTBJ6

Also most cats hate aluminum foil so that laid down on top will determine many.

yeah right, since the neighbors have cats they don't keep inside my child can't use the porch? No. I'd put the thing in a crate and take it to animal control. I hate rogue cats. My husband is super allergic, I'd have no qualms about getting rid of cats that live outside.

I would talk to the neighbors. If they don't care, then trap the cats and take them to the humane society. Too bad.

Sorry you don't want to trap the cats.

Google cat repellents. All sorts of ideas.
