Growth spurt in boys

I bet he took after you and will end up at 6’ or 6’1”. At 5’6” you are above average and your son is lucky to have taken after you

But, from my experience, and I am around a lot of teens as a teacher, boys who are tallest in grade at 12, usually end up on the short side. Given that you are both short, this is most likely the case. But, nothing is set in stone, genetics are funny and maybe your DS is taking after a tall grandpa and will be taller than your DH. Unlikely, but possible.

I am a middle school teacher, and this is what I generally see as well.

I have a college freshman who is still growing slowly and was very short starting high school. His middle school brother is almost as tall as he is now.

Thanks for the replies so far. I agree that everyone is different but was just looking for anecdotal stories about a tall boy at 12 with short parents and what the final result was. Most boys at his age are yet to enter their true growth spurt, I think on average it starts closer to 13. I just feel like it might be his growth spurt is early and was just curious what others experienced in this setting. The growth curves only represent the norm, but there are over 20000 kids each whose data contributes to those curves, each with their own story that all average out to create those norms.

Anyone out there who is short and had a tall twelve year old willing to share their experience? Thanks!

My son is now 15…all the 12 year old anomalies (seemingly tall kid, but, short parents) are now short 15 year olds. He had 3 friends like this when he was 12…they were all taller than him and he was probably 5’3 himself…not at 15, he’s 6’0 and his previously gigantic friends are 5’8, 5’7, and 5’5.

This is exactly what we see. I have a 17.5 and 15 year old sons. BUT- 15 is very early still. Look at 17/18. My oldest was still shorter at 15. He really didn’t shoot up until end of sophomore year. People are shocked when they see him now because he also filled out muscularly, over 6 feet. He was still 5’5”-5’6” end of Freshmen year at 15.

Downside is that he’s an athlete and has been sidelined with so many growth-related injuries. He’s lost most of Junior year/had to sit out sports.

He is now 17 and is 5'9". I think he just grew early. He was always a stocky kid and maybe the extra weight made him grow early?

This is like my niece. She towered over everyone in elem school. Had her period in 3rd grade. In every early family pic, she was massively tall compared to all other cousins. She’s 16 now and is barely 5’3”. Just an early puberty and growth ended.
