Holy shit. Within 10 years, two of three high schools are projected to have 3,000 students in (what I presume are) 2,000 student capacity buildings. And we just went through the craziness of that boundary redrawing for.... 150 students?

not ten years, but 5-7 years (assuming the calculations are correct - and we know from the McKinely fiasco, APS is using data that under represents the true student population)

And we also learned that when they get called out on their screw ups, they just shrug their shoulders are refuse to do anything about it.

How to get involved and make your opinion heard: (1) write to the school board (letters or emails); (2) go to School Board member open office hours and talk to the School Board members about your opinions; (3) invite School Board members to speak to your civic association or PTA-- and get neighbors to show up; (4) go to School Board meetings-- you can always speak during the "non agenda item" time for up to 3 minutes; (5) if you are a Democrat, VOTE IN THE MAY SCHOOL BOARD CAUCUS-- May 11 at Drew and May 13 at W-L--McMahon supports a 4th comprehensive high school but Lander does not.

Also, sign up for the Arlington Education Matters FB page. You don't need to be a current parent to join-- future and past parents are welcome too. That is a great way to keep up with the discussion, and a better source of factual data than the rumors that sometimes swirl on this website.

All the SB members are members of the AEM board. Keep that in mind if you chose to post there.

It's a pretty civil board. With very few exceptions. It's a good resource.

If it's another small program, i.e. only the 1,300 seats, Nancy Van Doren is pretty much dead-set that it would go at the Ed Center on the W-L campus. It would almost have to be some sort of lottery-based school similar to HB and Tech.

There aren't many places to put a comprehensive HS which is part of the problem. One option, if the land swap goes through, is to put it on the VHC property on Carlin Springs Rd. All HS boundaries would be re-drawn. Another option, since the Kenmore MS site is actually bigger, would be to relocate the middle school student body to the Ed Center (or the VHC property if acquired) and put the 4th high school there. A third option being bandied about would be the Career Center/Patrick Henry ES location.

Right now the APS Facilities Advisory Committee is exploring all the options to provide a report to the School Board.

For anyone who is interested in these places, the Facilities Advisory Committee is doing a bus tour/discussion of various sites on Saturday. I'm guessing it will mostly be a 'discussion' of why only the Ed Center is feasible since that seems to be what the board wants.

Saw this morning that Katie Cristol posted some pics on Twitter from the site visit. One of them was outside the Title Max on Lee Hwy. I don't think that parcel was named in the previous post, but it's adjacent to the office building that was (maybe they were just using that parking lot to gather, our maybe the addresses weren't exactly right?).

Interesting! A few years ago we looked into buying the house right next door to the title Max, It had been a 7-11 that had closed. We were told VHC owned the land. Maybe it has something to do with the land swap?

APS has reserved $147 M for the 1300 seats. Falls Church City (with similar land constraints) is building a new high school forb$127M that will house 1200 students. Seeems like APS could use the money for a full-size comprehensive high school. They just need to stop building Taj Ma High Schools.

Anyone know what happened on the bus tour?

They videoed it! I saw it on twitter and just watched it! I'd recommend watching if you have an hour to spare. It's quite interesting to see all the properties and hear about all of the needs of the county.

It turns out that the Lee Highway properties are on both sides of Lee Highway and are 4 buildings--the Title Max and the office building on the north side, and the Bank of America and the Little Ambassadors Preschool on the south side. These properties are owned by the hospital and are part of the potential land swap deal.

The two single family homes across from the main VHC campus are also owned by the hospital and part of the potential land swap deal.

The school board has put out a document about potential sites for a new high school. It's an interesting read. I think adding a high school to the Gunston and/or Kenmore sites makes the most sense after reading this. Plus a new elementary school at the Ed center site and maybe relocate Kenmore middle to the Carlin Springs VHC property. I'm sure that costs way more than we can spend (but it wouldn't all need to be done in this CIP).

I'd bet it's going at ATS.

I agree. It also makes sense from the long-term perspective. Add a 1300 seat facility to the property that we have the funding for now and then relocate the middle school seats elsewhere and expand the HS into the emptied MS space. Most of the ES sites they are considering would require FIRST building new ES seats somewhere else before you can start the HS. That's going to require more funding immediately and still not going to get the 1300 seats in place on time.
