OP,

You may not be aware of this, but saying you would reach out when your schedule opens up is something assholes say. It just is. Nobody else talks that way.

Like many on this thread did, I am sure he misunderstood you based on your choice of words, and he got defensive.

If you ever get the sense that someone is reading too much into a statement, clarify as quickly as you can, if you are interested in the person.

Misunderstandings will always happen. We are all different people from different places with different experiences. We just have to do our best to clarify.
