Isn't Howard County one of the best schools based on greatschools, niche, etc.?

I lived in HoCo for 5 years and loved it but wouldn't describe the county as "walkable". If you look at walk scores for various zip codes, the average in HoCo will be much lower than for MoCo: https://www.walkscore.com/score/21044

Sorry, meant Howard High School in my first sentence.

-my child's school
-our neighborhood pool
-2 pizza places
-my nail salon
-my hair salon
-dry cleaners
-some fast food
-drugstore (Walgreens)

Agreed. That was the whole idea behind the village centers and neighborhood pools.

That's nice but as a PP pointed out most of Howard county has much lower walkability score than Montgomery. And the fact remains if you are commuting to DC or its suburbs it's a shit commute.

We have a path in our neighborhood, and people walk all the time. Tons of runners (with organized mommy jogger groups).

I live outside of the area but we're still in the Sherwood cluster. In fact, we're about 10 mins away from Ho Co. My commute to Rockville is about 30 to 40 minutes. I am not complaining at all. In fact, I think it's an easy commute.

Now, I did commute to Bethesda a few times a year in my old job, and that was pure misery. But people fail to see how close Olney and Brookeville are to Rockville, and with the ICC, it's not hard to get into SS or G-burg and further up.

Ok. But you live outside of Howard county. I guess if you live on the nether regions of Montgomery and commute to a place that is still not DC then you can have an okay commute. That makes us both right and doesn't negate my point that commuting from Howard county is a dealbreaker for many.

eh

same difference

We're around the corner from Brighton Dam Road which is 1/2 Mo Co, 1/2 Howard. Where we live should be a deal breaker, too, but it's not. Dealing with a commute is a personal choice. I'd much prefer to sacrifice a bit for my kids, knowing that they're in a great community with solid schools.

I have friends who head down 29 to get to work. Others take 32. One friend in Fulton negotiated a deal where she works from home 90% of the time b/c she agreed to travel about 4x out of the year.

People do what they have to do. Personally, I know firsthand that Howard County schools are excellent. In fact, we almost moved there for the schools.

Well we weren't willing to sacrifice time with the family for the extra commute. My kids are getting a top notch education in Montgomery county so I don't feel we are sacrificing anything for a shorter commute. The magnet programs are awesome and I think the county is set up well to work with high achieving children. The problem with looking at a county's overall demographics is that it doesn't say much about how YOUR kids will do. I'm glad you're happy with your school in Howard county and don't feel the commute is a dealbreaker.

I'm not being flip. I really believe the schools will be equally fine.

Thanks. I looked at new homes in Wincopia Farms off of Gorman Road in Laurel

My hesistation is of Gorman Crossing Elem and Murray Hill Middle School.

We live in the Emerson Community (next to Wincopia). My son is a sophomore at Atholton. We are all very happy there - no complaints. My other son is an 8th grader at Murray Hill. It's a good school with great teachers. Both boys went to Gorman Crossing and we all loved it. No issues. Good luck with your home search!

Get the heck out of MoCo-it is becoming a cesspool and the schools are becoming sub-standard.

Especially with all the out of control development currently going in throughout the county. Tons of high density housing everywhere but not much talk of new schools and better infrastructure. Schools are already overcrowded and teachers are overworked. It will not get better for the kids.
