Yup. |
Most mothers do not really want to terminate the lives of their children. But they do want support to have and maintain a secure nuclear family unit for their children. |
Fantasy. Overturning Roe v. Wade means handing the right to make abortion laws back to the states in accordance with the 10th amendment. Making abortion illegal at the Federal level then would require a Constitutional amendment. Two thirds of both houses would be required. Not happening. Alternatively, the legislatures of two thirds of the states have to call a convention to propose. Also not happening. |
LOL, haven't we been hearing that for years? That The Demographics are Changing and Thus the Republicans will Become Irrelevant Once and for All. Well, here we are again. In fact, Trump received a larger minority % than did Romney, McCain, or GWB. So no...I'm not concerned at all. |
To be clear: no one ever wants to discontinue a pregnancy and you think some magical entity (probably the government if the Republicans' attachment to vouchers is any indication) should "support" their "nuclear family unit"? |

Folks, this is why it helps to educate yourself instead of just attending a rally when you vote.
For those on this thread who thought Roe v. Wade was going to be overturned: republicans really don't give a rat's ass about abortion other than pandering to the religious nuts. Priebus, currently the most powerful Republican given his new appointment (I'm not counting Trump since he isn't a republican), gave a speech last year on the pressing issues of the party. When he got to the pro-life movement, he said, we support pathways to adoption. Pro-lifers shat their pants since he didn't say ANYTHING about outlawing abortion. Lindsey Graham, not exactly a bastion of women's issues or abortion, also said this year to his fellow party members: you gotta cool it with abortion or we will lose more women and especially young women. Just chill and let the states deal with it. Which is exactly what Trump said if you were paying attention. He said he'd appoint pro-life judges who would "automatically overturn R v W" and anyone who knows anything about anything knows that's not how it works - and then he continued "and return abortion laws to the states." And there you have it. He doesn't really want to outlaw abortion in the US. He wants it to be a state issue. The republican party cares about economic policy that will benefit them and their corporate donors. Abortion is low on the list, except as a way to pander to the religious right. So I'm not saying things are great for the abortion rights movement right now. Women in red states are in danger of losing access in the coming years. But the party doesn't care enough about it to get enough women riled up to outlaw it completely. As for the red states, technology and the onslaught of virtual medicine will certainly improve access to medical abortion in the coming years and there is really not much anyone can do about that, at least for women in the first trimester. Finally, Zika is going to be a game changer for later term abortions. In Florida and the southern red states, there will be more and more cases in the coming years as the CDC has guaranteed. Rubio and the rest of them have no idea what caring for these babies will due to their budget, and they are not going to like that. The universe works in mysterious ways. |
But if abortion is murder, as they say, how can you justify not it being a federal crime? Not that logic is in vogue these days, but anyhow... |
Pyrrhic victory. Hillary lost because she was so bad, Obama voters did not show up. I do hope though that when whites are a minority, identity politics won't be a major driving force. So in that sense, you are right in the very long term but wrong on the medium term. |
I'm sorry but when you look at what has happened to abortion access in states like Alabama and Texas, and think about the fact that every year the Supreme Court is asked to consider taking on abortion-related cases, you would realize that there are a forces far more powerful than Priebus out there who are intent on doing whatever they can to over turn Roe v. Wade. And Trump tonight on 60 minutes assured those forces that he was going to appoint a judge who would rule in their favor. |
| Repubs will never overturn Roe V Wade. How would they fundraise? GOTV? They need the fight. |
