We are in the DCC in bounds for Einstein. Does Albert Einstein have separate classes for honors or do they mix honors and non-honors kids in classes. What about Blair (non-magnet kids)?

Different books/hw/tests..not always hugely different but something. In HS, honors classes are totally separate from grade level...my kid is in honors english, math, language, science and ss. I know not all schools are run the same way but I would checkin with the HS counselor.

Which middle and high school are your kids at?

I am curious too. Even in a magnet middle school, we are not differentiated for some classes. Never heard of

Please read the thread before posting. The issue is that this is NOT what is happening. An honors label is being stuck on a class that is basically an on-level class.

Exactly... It is not the norm in moco scools to mix.

Ap classes are for kids with tiger moms.

Honors classes are for kids whose parents want to self segregate from the "other" kids.

I can tell you that this is not what happens at Whitman. Maybe this is why Whitman is such a great school. Honors classes truly are honors classes. What a bunch of horse shXX if this is going on in other MCPS schools.

I have kids at both Blair and RM. Honors classes are also separate from grade level. Maybe this is why they are such great schools too!

Mom or an AP and Honors student. I am certainly no tiger mom, nor do I feel a need to segregate my child from kids who chose to take another academic track. My son chose to take honors and AP courses because he wants to raise his GPA. The college he wants to attend accepts students with an average 4.2 GPA. So to go to this college, he needs these courses. It has nothing to do with my being able to brag to my friends that he is an honors student (although I am very proud of him). Maybe I will brag when he gets accepted to his college of choice

I know exactly what is happening with these sour grapes posts like the one quoted above. There is certainly a jealousy factor here...or maybe they have been exposed to some of these "tiger moms," which I am sure can be plentiful especially in the W schools. I feel badly for posters like above who feel a need to bash families who decide to take the more challenging route. Maybe your kid has other things going for him. Maybe he or she is a star soccer player or playing a major role in the drama club. Please let kids who succeed feel good about it, whether it be in academics, sports, or other pursuits.

The lady doth protest too much me thinks

Top schools do not take weighted GPA. They also don't expect to see more than 5 AP classes. Honors have no affect on college entrance at all.

You may need to lie to yourself to feel better about your decisions, or maybe this is your oldest child and you don't really understand how it works.

You should let your kid take a few classes in the general population. It's cheaper than the $2500 you probably spent on his overseas "volunteer" work.

Not the poster you responded to, but you couldn't be more wrong. How do you know colleges only want to see 5 ap classes? Colleges look for rigor. They want to see that you are taking the most rigorous course load your school offers. If you look at Naviamce for your school, you will see that top schools accepted students with certain weighted GPAs. Honestly, you sound very jealous.

Wow, so MCPS gives 5 for A in honors classes. This is perfect example of GPA inflation. My DS's private only gives 4.5 for A in honors, but 5 for A in AP. How can you lump the honors classes in with the AP classes? Crazy.

I suspect Churchill does not mix, but I can't speak from experience.

It isn't crazy. The honors classes, at least at Whitman, are just as challenging as the AP classes. Kids work their butts off for those As with 5 points. Maybe Whitman is a better school than your private school.

Ha!! That is even crazier. I know kids at Whitman (friends of my son) and they are always trying to get him to go do something during the week. My DS has no time to socialize during the week because he actually has homework. The homework load at MCPS high schools is a joke.

Different kids need to do different amounts of work. I have one that seems to have tons of hw and another that rarely is unable to complete it during the school day (and has higher grades). Both are taking similar mixes of honors and AP classes.

You want heavy workload? Try magnets and tell me how you like it.
