Elizabeth Gilbert

It's crazy that in Eat, Pray, Love she seems so distraught about her marriage, crying on the bathroom floor and all this stuff, but she probably cheated on her husband a lot. I don't think that part is in there.

Yeah, she has talked publicly about her "overlapping relationships." But it's not cheating because the new person is always the one she was supposed to be with. Because she's been so open, I feel like most of these clowns who get involved with her are just getting what they deserve, but I do feel sorry for the current woman who must be in an incredibly vulnerable place.

I think she reveals why she is the type person who can't have children but also her life follows the course of someone who is forever free to indulge their own interests. I think this is particularly eye roll inducing to a parent in the thick of it but on some level I think she is a bit like all of us but just a lot less contained . She seems to own that.

Honestly, I commend her for being honest with herself about not wanting to have children. I don't have a lot to say about her personal life and relationships other than I can't imagine this is a good situation to bring kids into.

Kids would force Liz to pull her head out of her butt and focus on someone besides Liz and how Liz is feeling. But at least she does recognize that she's not willing to do that.

She and Cheryl strayed are both similar. So self absorbed.

Cheryl strayed is actually a busy mother of 2 ... I find them quite different

Ugh they are both awful. Who starts emails Dear Ones and dear lovelies. Glennon is the mega church pastor of mommy bloggers.

Yeah, Cheryl Strayed is a different category. She's sort of bossy and mean to Steve Almond in Dear Sugar Radio, but she's more of a person who admits that she had a really screwed up life and takes the lessons from that but doesn't really tell people what to do. I feel like Liz Gilbert and Glennon Doyle are much more prescriptive...like follow me, I have the answers even though I'm super screwed up.

White middle/upper class mommy bloggers.

I blame Oprah.

I just laughed out loud when I went to the BN website to look for a book, and Glennon's latest book is Oprah's book club selection.

I liked EPL and for all of you who hated it, would you have hated it as much if it was a little obscure book you happened upon? I think a lot of people hate the fame surrounding that book.
This is quite a dramatic turn in her life but the Facebook sounded real to me. She has no kids so she is not breaking up a family and she is going public with the sort of thing that most people keep to themselves. I didn't take it to mean she was discovering she was gay, but that she was in love with this particular woman.

The thing about EPL is it NEVER could have been an obscure little book. She got a $200k advance for it which is how she was able to go to Italy and India and Bali to even write the book. The whole thing was plotted and calculated. And yes, as an adult, I would roll my eyes at any adult woman who asks for s divorce, gets it, and then needs to devote an entire year to self-indulgence to cope with the choice. It was always juvenile and self absorbed, even if she's technically a good writer (and she is). Her material is just herself though and how did this make Liz feel? It gets old.

Her best friend is dying and that's awful but a healthy person doesn't assume that means they are a lesbian in love with their friend and get another divorce over it so they can be loud and proud for a few months til the friend dies. She is making such a spectacle and when her friend does die I hardly believe Liz Gilbert will continue living life as a lesbian.

When I found this out shortly after reading the book, it explained so much.

I can't figure out the Glennon thing...kind of "we're in it all together" but her life is not mine. And her self focus is also profound. Interesting, but I just don't get her.

holy shit! I've found my people, I remember thinking most all of these things when EPL was the rage and I could voice none of them since those around me thought it was great!
