Leckie principal put on leave

Stop with the schoolyard bullying tactics. 'You'd better tell me! Tell me or you're blowing hot air!"

That's soooo 5th grade.

You're funny!

But seriously, how is the "Stop asking me for facts or specifics, it's mean! You wanting me to explain my point makes me feel bad. You're a bully!" working for you in real life?

Yeah, that's what I thought...

Yeah, but that's the case in most DC schools.

We'll why aren't those principals out?

Because DCPS doesn't care about teachers. They will just bring in new people to replace the ones that leave. The extended year principals decided themselves without teacher input to switch calendars. In fact my principal told staff either get with the program or get out. I'm a sped teacher and I regularly sub for missing teachers. Last year I counted I subbed a total of 42 times. The principals don't care about the union contract.

At least you got paid. At my school we don't dare ask for money because "we are family and family doesn't need to be paid for helping each other". The one teacher who demanded payment was shockingly minimally effective last year.

Last year was my first and last year teaching in DCPS. We were required to cover classes every day due to teachers constantly calling out. On a given day, we had about 20 teachers out. The union contract mandated we be paid about 35 an hour for covering. I made at least an extra 300 each check. The downside is that I rarely had a planning period.

That sucks! What school since you're not there anymore? I definitely believe that happened though.

Now I want you to tell me all the vindictive things they have down while you have worked there. You shouldn't have a problem doing it since is anonymous. Oh you don't feel comfortable?

Principals troll the boards and so do staff members. Unless you've left the school you aren't gonna identify yourself with this info.

I'm glad you said this, because that proves that most people saying this, it's an individual experience, not a pattern of awful behavior. Because truly horrible principals (and I've met several) leave such a swath of nastiness and destruction in their wakes, there's no way you couldn't identify the school and the principal and reasons they're horrible without identifying yourself. Because whatever makes them so bad affected lots if adults and lots of kids. That is the definition of a horrible principal: awful patterns, awful choices, awful behaviors. There is plenty of examples of their horribleness.

If the reason you think they're horrible is so specific/unique that by giving a basic statement about it they'd know who you are, that's a direct individual horrible experience. That does not = an overall "horrible principal" just because you had your own awful experience. And if many others had the same bad experience, how will anyone know who is posting?

You've got no names, no basic facts about why they're so bad. You would be able to give basics on why they're so awful if they're that awful. You're huffing and puffing and should not be taken seriously unless you have some names and details.

Who ever you are, you clearly don't read the Washington Post, nor these boards or know how to google. There are plenty of names, example, and a whole website that was dedicated to the shenanigans at CHEC, including copies of emails for one. Happy reading! Even DCPS has fired principals, or what about Friends of Bedford and what happened at Coolidge and Roosevelt. What was the name of that principal again that changed grades, harassed teachers, and then got a promotion.

The comment in this thread that I'm responding to spoke of CURRENT principals. Not whether DCPS ever had horrible principals ever (or even last year). You guys can blather all you want, but this is a question of who is leading schools right now and while there is definitely a range, bottom line no one in this discussion is naming any current principals.

Why is that? And why should anyone just lurking on this thread believe it's for any reason other than that as far as current ones go, there may be a range but none are truly horrible? Are you guys really that afraid/incapable of defining horrible and then naming names and giving examples? Why do you expect anyone to take you seriously right now if you won't?

Boo hisss...Just check out the teacher turnover. That'll give you your answer.

Are you this petty & obtuse in real life?

Asking for details is fine. It's trying to manipulate and belittle them out of ppl that makes you an ass. Like grow up already!

Copy and paste anywhere in any of my posts in this convo where I "belittle" or "manipulate" anyone by saying that without facts it's hot air. That is a statement of fact: if you don't give details, you are not making a credible case (or any case!) that your statement is true. You equating asking for details and facts with being a bully is absurd. But since you did say it, where am I belittling or manipulating anyone?

Or, once again, do you get through discussions about important issues by making unsupportable statements and then crying "Owww! You're a meanie and manipulating me!" when you can't even begin to prove your point? Does no one in your real life ever actually ask you to support your statements with facts? If so, why are you so sensitive or victimized by it?

Using your words, I've been belittling and manipulative. Please paste the quotes here that you see as doing that since you're accusing me of it.

I actually totally agree with this, high teacher turnover and where it occurs most is a key indicator that there are serious problems in a school. So fine, go ahead and name the schools with the highest teacher turnover since you seem to have info on that? You make a really good point! But again the conversation is pointless if there's no info about which schools have the highest turnover and what is so bad about the principal there. And high rates of teacher turnover is not at all a personal thing, so no risk of identifying yourself by talking about it.

Please quit wasting our attention with this "name names" stuff.

This is not a court of law. It's just a forum discussion.

I'd love to learn why the Leckie principal was placed on leave. If it's not related to that, can you rant elsewhere?

Give it a rest. Everyone knows DC school leaders are horrible. There's a reason teacher turn over is so high--and it's not because the principals are so wonderful.

Students and parents can be thorns in the side but if admin is competent and supportive, teachers find it all tolerable.

Anywho, I wonder why this made the news. Personnel decisions of this sort rarely do, unless the reason is egregious.

Sadly this is true. Not at every school. But some admin will throw teachers under the bus when it comes to standing up to atrocious parents.
Others are weak leaders who do the bare minimum but can coast on the efforts of strong PTAs. Whenever something important comes up it's not their department and they (that is, the kids) lose the fight.

Atasha James.

(I know that she's not the person you were talking about. But I bet you anything this is what the suspension is about. Lots of shady stuff going on under her watch.)

I don't doubt that one bit. Just wondering what would make them finally put her in check? Was she a favorite being protected by Henderson who is now leaving and unable to protect her? Or were her actions just oh so bad this time around?

Is she still on leave?

Yes, she was a fav of Henderson. I think slowly but surely Henderson's favorites are going to drop off. Problem is that they have bred a new generation of admins. who have been trained in the DCPS way.

I consider my point proven that there's no "there" there. But welcome to DCUM if you are new enough to think that "just a forum discussion" means everyone doesn't have equal rights to question the assertions of someone they think is being unfair. I didn't start the discussion thread I was responding to, and I have every right to ask the questions I did, exactly because "it's just a forum discussion".

But I'm also interested still in why this principal was placed on leave, since it's unusual for the rumor mill to be SO quiet on this. Not that people haven't voiced their theories - many have. But usually by now someone has leaked a scenario that sounds more plausible than most. That hasn't happened yet, at least not here. It's a major step to take during a school year though, so someone with power felt it was that urgent...

Please go away! I know a teacher at this school but it is none of my business to pry into why her principal was placed on leave. It is the beginning of the school year and people "in the know" are concerned with other matters like educating children.
