| At my school I've seen some teachers show movies but our administration is pretty strict about it. Classes are busy with field day, Stem projects, arts and crafts, end of year writing activities, spelling bees, reader's theater, math olympics, etc. |
| I think it sends a bad message that when the SOL is over then education is over. |
I see this more at the HS level than ES. My DS is a sophomore. School was closed Friday due to graduation and they have half days M-W. TH is a 4 hour early dismissal. |
None of this requires the kids to be in school, just the teacher. Yes, let's keep 30 kids in class watching a movie so a teacher can finish up some paperwork.

You are focusing on one potential reason. The other reasons listed include the need to test students one on one and give the kids some fun as a class. |
They don't have finals? My freshman DS started finals on Friday, he has one final on Monday (then he goes to DD's graduation in the afternoon), and two finals on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Actually, I don't remember finals ever being so late in the school year before - I'm pleasantly surprised that they are actually doing something, even if they do have an early release right after the exams. However, from what I remember of ES, they didn't do much after the SOLs. |
Yes, he has finals, but they are still half days. |
Please complain about this to admin PP. Maybe that way, they will give teachers a paid day or even half day to get this done without students. Otherwise, your child will be watching a movie while it gets done (shudder). |

My AAP 6th grader still learning, to prepare them for 7th grade math. Other subjects too. They also have fun stuffs in between learning. More relaxed than the rest of the year.
The thing is do you want the kids to be home now, and missed doing fun things with their friends? If you do, don't send them to school these last few days. Not many people have the luxury for early summer. Only 1 of my kids asked for early dismissal note, so I did that. The others enjoy to stay in school. Parents, you have a choice too. |
